With the Chicago Bears having the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, it is widely expected that they will go for Caleb Williams. All the hype is about the USC rookie, expecting him to be an easy first choice for any team in need of a new quarterback. With rumors of Justin Fields being potentially traded already plenty, it seems like a done deal for the Bears. However, one former quarterback has a different suggestion for Chicago.

Former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky expressed a different opinion on the Bears’ pick on ESPN’s Get Up. The sports analyst feels that Chicago would find a better candidate in Jayden Daniels. With the Draft approaching, the most anticipated decision is going to be of the Bears, having the best spot at acquiring the newbie of their choice and strengthening their roster.

In his recent appearance on ‘GetUp,’ Orlovsky mentioned that earlier, he thought Williams wasn’t the obvious choice for the top spot, as he preferred Drake Maye. But now the ESPN analyst has changed his opinions after looking at another LSU player’s graph. He even called Daniels “the best player in college football,” citing the QB’s game against the University of Florida as an example. Daniels is the new top pick of Orlovsky for Chicago. He further clarified that he doesn’t mean to put a question mark on Williams’ ability as a player. He simply sees a plus point in Daniels.

I have not thought that Caleb Williams was a lock at No. 1 because I thought Drake Maye would be the guy. I was wrong in that,” Orlovsky said. “Jayden Daniels should be the guy. If I were the Chicago Bears right now, I would take Jayden Daniels out of LSU. That is not a knock on Caleb Williams. That is a plus in Jayden Daniels.”

Talking about the reasons for his preference, the ESPN analyst gave three-pointers. Firstly, he talked about Daniels being the “best thrower, the best guy against man coverage, ball placement-wise.” Secondly, he mentioned that the LSU player “throws the ball best downfield,” which will be very helpful in explosive plays. Finally, Orlovsky feels that while all potential picks are athletic, Daniels possesses the extra factor of “patience and peace.” The analyst stands firmly in favor of the LSU quarterback, who chose to skip this year’s NFL Combine.

The top 3 Draft QB prospects to skip NFL Combine

Whereas scouting teams are busy figuring out who’ll be the best pick for their teams at the Combine, the top quarterbacks are choosing to skip the event. Williams, Daniels, and Maye have opted out of this year’s Combine. The quarterbacks have instead chosen to participate in their college practice for the upcoming Pro Day. While Daniels will be present at the venue for meetings and interviews, the LSU QB won’t be seen throwing.

The Heisman Trophy winner is going to let his stellar college record do the talking. His 2023 stats shine with 40 touchdowns, 3812 passing yards and 72.2% completions. The six-foot-four QB himself had expressed his desire to be in the Bears in an interview with ESPN. Daniels said, “If I get drafted by the Bears, I’ll be excited.” However, he is keeping all possibilities open and expressed, “I’m not pushing any agenda. At the end of the day, the Bears have the last say.”

It is indeed going to be Chicago’s last say, no matter what the players and analysts feel. Having the No. 1 pick in the draft is definitely a huge responsibility, and the Bears will use all brainpower and resources to make the most of it.
