The Broncos have lost a nail-biter 26-23 against the Patriots and Sean Payton is under the NFL community’s radar. The play calls during crucial moments made them lose out on a home game at a crucial stage in the season. HC Bill Belichick, on the other hand, gave fans the perfect Christmas present by clinching their fourth.

As the game ended, the ex-49ers QB Kurt Benkert fired a jab-filled X post against Payton, which might seem reasonable. The Broncos were in total control 7-3 at the start of the second half but got downright thrashed by the Patriots in the third quarter. Belichick’s Christmas win was visible when the Patriots secured a 20-point lead in the third quarter. Now, Sean Payton has got his hands on trouble as the 7-8 Broncos land at the 11th place in the AFC standings.

A forced punt by the Patriots opened the doors for the team’s offense to take charge. After that, the Patriots just blasted out the third quarter by pulling out a streak of touchdowns. The eye-catching drive started when QB Bailey Zappe’s couple of throws to Demario Douglas proved wonders as the rookie covered 54 yards. RB Ezekial Elliot put the cherry on top and secured a TD.

After forcing two punts by the Broncos, the Patriots again secured a TD with a 52-yard drive as Mike Gesicki made the end zone. Then again, a crucial fumble by the Broncos turned it into a TD by the Patriots, and in less than 10 minutes it was 23-7. This play call caught the eyes of the ex-49ers’ QB Kurt Benkert. He raised a question against HC Sean Payton that has caught the eye.

Kurt Benkert posted on X, “Explain to me how Sean Payton deserves a job after this.” The question may be open to public opinion, but the 28-year-old QB, who plays in the XFL league, might have a point. Benkert’s statement certainly holds some credit since Payton’s team made the plays they needed to but weren’t able to.

During the post-game press conference, Payton cited how the script got flipped: “The advantage we had were the timeouts. And so, we got zero-blitzed a few times, they got us to third-down.” He agreed that they “had to punt it” and still had the ability to stop the clock. He added, “I mean, we felt like we’d get the stop. We weren’t able to, and then all of the sudden the script’s flipped.”

The head coach’s ‘greedy decisions’ during the game are somewhat to be blamed. For instance, Payton wanted the football back again in regulation, but it didn’t work well. However, we know that HC Sean Payton is not going anywhere soon. Even if Payton does, he will secure another deal in no time. Moreover, the NFL community rightly credits him for reinstating the Broncos’ credibility.

The fourth-quarter resurgence by the Broncos made the score tied as Russell Wilson secured two TDs but another decision by HC Sean Payton to announce a timeout at a minute remaining neglected the possibility of the game going to extra time. As HC Sean Payton has to answer some hard questions, the Broncos can’t afford to make the same mistakes again.

Realistically, a playoff spot seems like a far-fetched dream. The Broncos have to gather remaining strength and win all the remaining games to make the playoffs after 7 years. On top of this, they need the Kansas City Chiefs to lose their next. What’s your take on Payton’s decision-making during this game?
