Since their opening defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Washington Commanders have managed a 3 game winning streak. And Jayden Daniels has had a lot to do with their success. The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner has more than justified his overall 2nd pick this year. With his 82.1% pass completion and nearly 900-yards passing with more than 200-yards rushing, he’s had an insane start.

With the Commanders’ upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns, the hype is real. But first, some guidance for him from Chris Long, former defensive end and two-time Super Bowl winner. By far the most important advice revolved around Daniels protecting himself. He brought up the case of Robert Griffin III, “RG3.” The young man was famously mismanaged by Washington (then the Redskins). Late in the season, he suffered a knee injury, but his team allowed him to keep playing before he recovered, with a knee brace on. The buckling of his knee in a playoff game was a turning point in his career. Let that never happen to Daniels.

In advising him on how to be more careful, he pushed him to not lose pocket presence. He compared him to RG3, calling them both wiry players and acknowledging that, while both had very different styles, they focused on play extension and played very quarterback run games. But first and foremost, “learn how to fall. Learn how to get out of bounds, and learn how to pass up the big hit.

He then went on to praise his playstyle, and how it should keep him safe. With Jayden Daniels, rushing should not be a focus, since he “can throw the laces off a pigskin.” But while acknowledging his rushing prowess anyway, Long labels Daniels a “full menu” player. Of course, Kliff Klingsbury’s role in all this isn’t to be ignored. Long pointed out the excellent combination of “good coaching and excellent execution.

Will Daniels’ Commanders keep their winning streak running?

The Washington Commanders come into their Sunday game 3-1, while the Cleveland Browns languish at 1-3. It’s clear who’s got the mindset advantage. Plus, after a shaky first game, Daniels has completely come into his element and owns the field. On paper, the quarterback matchup also goes in the Commander’s favor. Deshaun Watson’s only played 16 games total since the end of the 2020 season, struggling with a shoulder injury. While his performance this year hasn’t been terrible, it pales in comparison to young Daniels.

The Browns defense has been performing fairly well this season, and they’ll need to lean on them to neutralize Daniels’ threat. Plus, the offense needs to step their game up in general, managing just 151.5 passing yards a game so far. In all honesty, it doesn’t look great for the Browns, and unless Daniels seriously falters, that Commanders win-streak looks pretty secure for now.
