Week 7 of the NFL season wasn’t as entertaining as the last couple, but there were still a lot of very big results. Some of the top teams cemented their status as contenders, while others folded and proved their hot start was a bit of a fluke.

PFF Rankings: Offense 29th, Defense 16th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Bengals

I’m running out of words to describe how bad the New York Jets are. Their defense is alright, but that offense is just horrendous. Easily the worst team in the league, and that’s saying something with the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, and Las Vegas Raiders in the same league.

31. Tennessee Titans (1-6)

Last Week’s Ranking: 31

Week 7 Result: 31-13 loss to Patriots

PFF Rankings: Offense 20th, Defense 20th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 4:25 pm at Colts

Speaking of the Titans, they actually gave the New England Patriots a bit of a scare…for about five minutes. Then they came back to Earth. Bad offense, bad defense = bad team. Pretty simple equation.

30. Miami Dolphins (1-6)

Last Week’s Ranking: 29

Week 7 Result: 31-6 loss to Browns

PFF Rankings: Offense 31st, Defense 30th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Falcons

I’m surprised Mike McDaniel hasn’t been fired yet. This team has some juice offensively for some weeks, and then they go out and score six points the next. There’s just not a whole lot to like about this team outside of De’Von Achane and Jaylen Waddle.

29. Las Vegas Raiders (2-5)

Last Week’s Ranking: 27

Week 7 Result: 31-0 loss to Chiefs

PFF Rankings: Offense 25th, Defense 31st

Week 8 Matchup: Bye

These bottom four teams are easily in a tier of their own. I don’t know how the Raiders have managed to win two games, because they’re just flat out bad. I know the Kansas City Chiefs are a very good football team, but losing 31-0 to anybody is a horrible look.

28. New Orleans Saints (1-6)

Last Week’s Ranking: 26

Week 7 Result: 26-14 loss to Bears

PFF Rankings: Offense 26th, Defense 22nd

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 4:05 pm vs Buccaneers

The New Orleans Saints were one of the feistiest 1-5 teams I’d ever seen, but man, did they lay an egg this week. The Chicago Bears came out and dominated them in every facet of the game. This game wasn’t as close as the 26-14 score indicates.

27. Arizona Cardinals (2-5)

article-image

Last Week’s Ranking: 25

Week 7 Result: 27-23 loss to Packers

PFF Rankings: Offense 22nd, Defense 27th

Week 8 Matchup: Bye

The Arizona Cardinals have been surprisingly competitive with Jacoby Brissett under center, but they’re still not a good team. Like most of the teams down here, they have too many problems on both sides of the ball to be competitive.

26. Cleveland Browns (2-5)

Last Week’s Ranking: 30

Week 7 Result: 31-6 win over the Dolphins

PFF Rankings: Offense 32nd, Defense 1st

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Patriots

The Cleveland Browns dominated the Dolphins on Sunday. Their defense held Miami to just six points, and their offense somehow put up 31 points with a tad over 200 yards of offense. They still have issues offensively, don’t let the score fool you, but it was a pretty good win for the Browns.

25. Baltimore Ravens (1-5)

Last Week’s Ranking: 24

Week 7 Result: Bye

PFF Rankings: Offense 21st, Defense 28th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm vs Bears

The Baltimore Ravens are not a good football team without Lamar Jackson, and even when he’s in, they’ve had problems this year. Jackson still isn’t practicing, and their defense still has a ton of question marks. The only reason they’re this high is because of their potential when Jackson does return.

24. New York Giants (2-5)

Last Week’s Ranking: 22

Week 7 Result: 33-32 loss to Broncos

PFF Rankings: Offense 26th, Defense 13th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Eagles

What a heartbreaking loss for the New York Giants. They had that game in the bag, and they completely choked it away. They’ve got some juice, but you cannot excuse giving up 33 points and blowing a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter.

23. Cincinnati Bengals (3-4)

Last Week’s Ranking: 28

Week 7 Result: 33-31 win over the Steelers

PFF Rankings: Offense 28th, Defense 29th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm vs Jets

Joe Flacco, man. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with him since arriving in Cincinnati. I thought that the offensive line would get him killed, but their quick pass game has helped him avoid taking too many hits. Also, Ja’Marr Chase is the best receiver in football. Argue with a wall.

22. Houston Texans (2-4)

Last Week’s Ranking: 19

Week 7 Result: 27-19 loss to Seattle

PFF Rankings: Offense 19th, Defense 5th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm vs 49ers

The Houston Texans had a tough test in front of them this week, traveling across the country to take on the Seattle Seahawks at 9 pm CT, but they really just didn’t play well. If it weren’t for a late touchdown, the score would’ve been 27-12. Their offense just isn’t that good, and their defense gave up 27 points despite forcing two turnovers.

21. Minnesota Vikings (3-3)

Last Week’s Ranking: 20

Week 7 Result: 28-22 loss to Eagles

PFF Rankings: Offense 23rd, Defense 19th

Week 8 Matchup: Thursday, 8:15 pm at Chargers

The Minnesota Vikings’ loss was more due to the Philadelphia Eagles finally figuring things out on offense than the Vikings not playing well. I think from here on out, all of these teams can be competitive against anyone; the Vikings are just at the bottom of that barrel.

20. Washington Commanders (3-4)

Last Week’s Ranking: 18

Week 7 Result: 44-22 loss to Cowboys

PFF Rankings: Offense 15th, Defense 18th

Week 8 Matchup: Monday, 8:15 pm at Chiefs

The Washington Commanders have been very disappointing this season. I know they’re dealing with their fair share of injuries, but it still feels like they’re missing some of that swagger they had last year. I still think Jayden Daniels is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and when they’re healthy, they can be a good team, but for now, they’re outside the top 20.

19. Carolina Panthers (4-3)

Last Week’s Ranking: 21

Week 7 Result: 13-6 win over Jets

PFF Rankings: Offense 14th, Defense 16th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm vs Bills

The Carolina Panthers are in the midst of a three-game win streak, but it feels like they have a pretty firm ceiling. No matter how well they’re playing, you never feel great about them going into a game. But they’re winning, and that’s all that matters.

18. Atlanta Falcons (3-3)

article-image

Last Week’s Ranking: 13

Week 7 Result: 20-10 loss to 49ers

PFF Rankings: Offense 12th, Defense 22nd

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm vs Dolphins

The Atlanta Falcons looked really good a week ago against the Buffalo Bills, but laid an egg against the San Francisco 49ers. They have so many playmakers offensively and a pretty solid young quarterback, so when they struggle like they did a couple of nights ago against a banged-up defense, it really makes you scratch your head.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-3)

Last Week’s Ranking: 15

Week 7 Result: 35-7 loss to Rams

PFF Rankings: Offense 24th, Defense 14th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Falcons

I’ve been very low on the Jacksonville Jaguars all season, even after they beat the Chiefs. Their offense just isn’t consistent enough to contend with some of the top teams in the AFC. I think Trevor Lawrence’s peak is how he played against the Chiefs, and he’s not good enough to give you that every week.

16. Los Angeles Chargers (4-3)

Last Week’s Ranking: 16

Week 7 Result: 38-24 loss to Colts

PFF Rankings: Offense 16th, Defense 11th

Week 8 Matchup: Thursday, 8:15 pm vs Vikings

The Los Angeles Chargers are kind of in the same boat as the Jags. They were extremely overhyped after their hot start, but that’s due to their injuries. When they’re healthy, they’re a much better team than Jacksonville, but right now, they’re pretty comparable.

15. Dallas Cowboys (3-1-1)

article-image

Last Week’s Ranking: 23

Week 7 Result: 44-22 win over Commanders

PFF Rankings: Offense 5th, Defense 32nd

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 4:25 pm at Broncos

The Dallas Cowboys should probably be lower than this, but it’s hard to put what I think is the best offense in football in the bottom half of the league. Their defense took some strides forward this week, so if they can build on that, the Cowboys could be a threat to make the playoffs.

14. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 14

Week 7 Result: 33-31 loss to Bengals

PFF Rankings: Offense 21st, Defense 7th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 8:20 pm vs Packers

The Pittsburgh Steelers just lost to the Bengals on TNF, but I’m not too worried about them. Their offense looked solid, and their defense, though disappointing this week, should be just fine. They’re still my pick to win the North.

13. Chicago Bears (4-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 17

Week 7 Result: 26-14 win over Saints

PFF Rankings: Offense 13th, Defense 13th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Falcons

The Bears came out and asserted themselves against a sneaky Saints team. They came out and scored early, and while it was only a 12-point win, it felt more like a 20-point win watching it live.

12. Green Bay Packers (4-1-1)

article-image

via Imago

Last Week’s Ranking: 12

Week 7 Result: 27-23 win over the Cardinals

PFF Rankings: Offense 11th, Defense 2nd

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 8:15 pm at Steelers

The Green Bay Packers are one of the most overrated teams in the league, in my opinion, but they’re 4-1-1, so I have to give credit where it’s due. Still, it will be interesting to see how they perform against Pittsburgh and Philadelphia in two of the next three weeks.

11. New England Patriots (5-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 11

Week 7 Result: 31-13 win over Titans

PFF Rankings: Offense 7th, Defense 24th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm vs Browns

The Patriots started slow against the Titans, but turned it on and went on to win by 18 points. They did what good teams should do: beat up on lesser opponents. Drake Maye is still playing great, and their defense has been pretty solid, too.

10. Philadelphia Eagles (5-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 10

Week 7 Result: 28-22 win over Vikings

PFF Rankings: Offense 9th, Defense 5th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm vs the Giants

The Eagles’ offense was clicking on Sunday, with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith having big games through the air. I still need to see more from Saquon Barkley before declaring them completely back, so for now, they stay at 10th despite the win. But that’s also largely due to pretty much every favorite, and therefore all the top teams, winning this week.

9. Denver Broncos (5-2)

article-image

Last Week’s Ranking: 9

Week 7 Result: 33-32 win over the Giants

PFF Rankings: Offense 18th, Defense 10th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 4:25 pm vs Cowboys

The Denver Broncos just pulled off one of the most improbable victories in NFL history, but don’t let that distract you from the fact that they were shut out through three quarters against the Giants. They have to figure a few things out offensively, but they’re 5-2, so they stay in our top 10.

8. Buffalo Bills (4-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 7

Week 7 Result: Bye

PFF Rankings: Offense 6th, Defense T-25th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Panthers

The Bills had a bye this week, and by the time they play next week, it will have been nearly a month since their last win. People are putting them in the back of their minds with so many other teams impressing, but I still have belief the Bills can turn things around.

7. San Francisco 49ers (5-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 8

Week 7 Result: 20-10 win over Falcons

PFF Rankings: Offense 10th, Defense T-25th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 1 pm at Falcons

The 49ers have been decimated by injuries, but they just keep on winning. When healthy, this is a top-five team in the league, but with so many key injuries, eventually it has to catch up to them, right? Regardless, they’re 5-2 and in the thick of the NFC race.

6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2)

article-image

Last Week’s Ranking: 1

Week 7 Result: 24-9 loss to Lions

PFF Rankings: Offense 17th, Defense 12th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 4:05 pm at Saints

The Buccaneers dropped a big one to the Lions on Monday night, but they shouldn’t feel too bad about themselves. They were down three of their top five playmakers on offense, and let’s be real, having Mike Evans and Emeka Egbuka at 50 percent really didn’t do much. I think they’re going to be fine once they get healthy, but that needs to happen sooner than later.

5. Los Angeles Rams (5-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 6

Week 7 Result: 35-7 win over Jaguars

PFF Rankings: Offense 2nd, Defense 3rd

Week 8 Matchup: Bye

You could argue that the Los Angeles Rams are the best team in the league, and I would not be mad. All of these top five teams argue for being the best team in the NFL, which made them incredibly hard to rank. I love Matthew Stafford, and their defense has one of the best pass rushes in football. That’s a good combo to have in January.

4. Seattle Seahawks (5-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 3

Week 7 Result: 27-19 win over Texans

PFF Rankings: Offense 1st, Defense 9th

Week 8 Matchup: Bye

The Seahawks continue to pump out victories. Sam Darnold threw a pick, but looked good outside of that one mistake. Their run game wasn’t perfect, but it was better than it has been this year. And their defense played a very strong game against C.J. Stroud and the Texans’ offense. They only fall a spot because I think the Chiefs’ domination of the Raiders was a bit more impressive.

3. Kansas City Chiefs (4-3)

article-image

via Imago

Last Week’s Ranking: 4

Week 7 Result: 31-0 win over the Raiders

PFF Rankings: Offense 8th, Defense 8th

Week 8 Matchup: Monday, 8:15 pm vs Commanders

I know the Chiefs are 4-3, but you can’t deny they’re playing like arguably the best team in football. They’ve been rolling their opponents ever since their loss to the Jags, and with Rashee Rice back, they’re just even more dangerous.

2. Detroit Lions (5-2)

Last Week’s Ranking: 5

Week 7 Result: 24-9 win over Buccaneers

PFF Rankings: Offense 4th, Defense 4th

Week 8 Matchup: Bye

The Lions bounced back in a big way with a win over the Buccaneers on Monday night, but it was a less-than-100 percent Bucs team. Still, the Bucs are a very good football team, even with their injuries, so this was a great win for Detroit. I was impressed with their offense, but man, what an effort from the Lions’ defense on Monday. That was my biggest takeaway.

1. Indianapolis Colts (6-1)

Last Week’s Ranking: 2

Week 7 Result: 38-24 win over Chargers

PFF Rankings: Offense 3rd, Defense 20th

Week 8 Matchup: Sunday, 4:25 pm vs Titans

The Indianapolis Colts just keep on dominating the competition. It doesn’t matter who you put in front of them; they’re going to score 30+ points. They’re playing the best football in the league right now, so they become the third team in the last three weeks to occupy the top spot in our power rankings.
