The New York Giants’ rookie core, once the biggest reason for optimism, has been hit by injuries. First, Malik Nabers went down with an ACL tear. Then Cam Skattebo’s right leg bent in a brutal way. But there’s a pulse of hope under all the medical chaos.

The Giants’ head coach, Brian Daboll, finally got some real news on Skattebo’s mess of an injury. And for once, it’s not all doom and gloom.

According to Ian Rapoport, “the recovery window sits around four to six months. Painful stretch, sure, but it sets Skattebo up perfectly for OTAs and minicamp. A long slog, but a clean one. No major setbacks expected…NYG expects him back for the offseason program.”

That’s massive news, considering how brutal the injury looked. In short, he’s out for the year, but the offseason might not start without him. For a player carted off in Week 8 with his ankle twisted sideways, that’s about as uplifting as it gets.

The injury happened when Jaxson Dart tried to pass over the middle, and Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun came crashing down on Skattebo’s leg. The rookie’s right foot immediately pointed the wrong way.

Still, there’s a reason Daboll and the medical team aren’t pressing the panic button. Doctor of Physical Therapy Tom Christ explained the situation‌.

“I cannot emphasize enough how critical his age is here. I know this is going to sound crazy here, but Chris Godwin being 28 when his injury happened, that five-year gap of 23 to 28 is huge with these types of rehabs. The younger you are, the more efficient your body is at healing,” Christ said in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Among all the encouraging news, there’s a harsh reality too. Skattebo isn’t just battling one injury, but a trio of serious setbacks.

Breaking down Cam Skattebo’s multiple injuries

The Giants’ rookie back is dealing with multiple injuries: a dislocated ankle, a fibula fracture, and a torn deltoid ligament. It sounded like a career detour when it happened. But apparently, the guy’s built differently.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Skattebo was “placed on IR yesterday.” And after the injury, he was taken to the hospital where the doctors fixed him up, and the surgery went smoothly.

As per Christ, that surgery was necessary for “infection” control. Assuming no infection, Skattebo will be able to jog and lift weights after four months.

“It’s infection control. We kind of thought this from watching the injury — both the tibia and fibula snapped…It was an open fracture, meaning the skin has been compromised. Now, any bacteria from his sock, the field, wherever, can easily get into the skin. And since the bone is fractured, it could get into the bone itself,” Christ said.

However, if everything goes as planned. Cam Skattebo is “set up for a really good rehab.” Daboll and the Giants aren’t exactly celebrating, but this timeline flips the vibe in the locker room. They needed some good news.
