John Mara, the longtime owner of the New York Giants and grandson of franchise founder Tim Mara, revealed in a statement Monday that he has been diagnosed with cancer. The news quickly sent ripples through the football world, with an overwhelming wave of support pouring in from players, coaches, fans, and even rival teams.

One of the most powerful tributes came from Giants legend and Ring of Honor member Osi Umenyiora. Following Mara’s announcement, Umenyiora recalled an emotional moment from 2008, when he suffered a season-ending knee injury. He posted on X: “In 2008 I tore my knee up. Out for the season. Only one person from the [organization] came to the hospital to see me. John Mara. I couldn’t believe it was him, I just started crying. And he just sat there until I fell asleep. Didn’t say a word. He will beat this for sure.”
That memory, deeply personal yet widely relatable, spoke volumes about Mara’s quiet compassion and connection to his players. Something far beyond wins, losses, or contracts.

Since taking over in 2005, John Mara has overseen two Super Bowl titles, seven playoff appearances, and the opening of MetLife Stadium. He has also been a pivotal voice on the NFL’s competition committee. Playing a key role in bringing both Super Bowl XLVIII and next summer’s FIFA World Cup Final to East Rutherford, New Jersey.

But what separates Mara from many in his position is how visible and hands-on he remains. He’s known for being present at practices, in the cafeteria, and on the sidelines—not locked away in an office. During times of fan frustration, he has answered letters and emails personally, acknowledging the disappointment while reaffirming his own accountability.
He’s also seen the team endure turbulence: since Tom Coughlin’s exit in 2015, the Giants have cycled through four head coaches. Current head coach Brian Daboll finally notched a desperately needed win in Week 4, with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart delivering his first NFL victory against the previously undefeated Chargers. Mara was right there on the sideline, sharing in the relief. Hours later, he went public with his cancer diagnosis.
John Mara is not a typical NFL owner. He has been spotted waiting in line at a New York parking garage just like any other fan, and he admits he could never see himself doing anything other than running the Giants.
“I mean, I was reasonably competent as an attorney—at least I’d like to think so—but I could never really imagine doing anything else,” he once told me. “This is too much in my blood.”
And if Umenyiora’s memory is any indication, Mara won’t be fighting this battle alone.
NFL community rallies around Giants owner John Mara
John Mara has been part of the Giants organization since 1991. Stepping into the role of owner and team president in 2005 after his father, Wellington Mara, passed away. In his announcement, he shared, “I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors. I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this thing through to a positive outcome.”
“I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support — personally, professionally, and medically. I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”

Former Giants coach Tom Coughlin voiced his support, saying, “Sending strength, support, and prayers to John Mara. Your leadership and grit inspire everyone around you. No one fights cancer alone. It takes a team and always proud to be on yours.”

Even former wide receiver Antonio Brown shared that he was “hoping for the best for John Mara.” The Jets’ note read, “Thoughts are with John Mara and his family. Sending strength, support, and well wishes.”
The timing of it all added weight. Just as the Giants broke through with a win, their leader revealed he is facing a very different fight.
