The New York Giants are eager to turn a fresh page this season, taking the first step toward rebuilding by hiring veteran head coach John Harbaugh. Now, a former Super Bowl linebacker of Big Blue, who also played under John Harbaugh after signing with the Baltimore Ravens early in the 2022 season, wants one last ride in New York and a reunion with his former head coach.

“@nygiants I’m still available and ready to take on some OT’s and dominate in run-stop football the GIANTS WAY,” wrote linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul on X. “Let’s make it happen, Giant Fans, Giant Nation. Let’s go!! I know, I know, I know.”

The New York Giants selected Jason Pierre-Paul with the 15th overall pick from the 2010 NFL Draft. After a quiet rookie season, Pierre-Paul quickly became a defensive cornerstone, starting for the next seven seasons. His dominance peaked in 2011 when he set the franchise’s single-season record with 16.5 sacks, highlighting a Giants tenure where he amassed 58.5 sacks and 432 combined tackles.

Pierre-Paul spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career there, winning Super Bowl XLVI. The three-time Pro Bowler’s first two honors (2011 and 2012) came in New York, making his tenure at the franchise the best phase of his career.
However, the run came with a major setback when a Fourth of July accident in 2015 changed his life. While lighting the fireworks purchased for a neighborhood party in Deerfield Beach, Florida, the final discharge cost the LB his right hand. The incident led to the amputation of his right index finger alongside severe damage to his thumb and middle finger, leaving him with just 2 healthy fingers in his right hand.
Following the injury, the LB returned to play in eight games with the Giants in 2015 and spent two more seasons in New York, logging a total of 16.5 sacks during this period. Pierre-Paul’s comeback even left the franchise stunned.
“In absolutely no way did we think he would play,” former Giants vice president of player personnel Marc Ross said. “He’s a medical marvel, really.”
Paul proved his success wasn’t limited to New York, building a second act with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won another Super Bowl and earned his third Pro Bowl nod before brief stints with the Ravens, Saints, and Dolphins.
However, his past success might not be enough to land a new contract with the New York Giants in 2026, a team that is currently in a rebuilding phase.
Limited game time makes Jason Pierre-Paul’s Giants reunion unlikely
Despite his experience, the LB is a shadow of his former self at this stage of his career, and his recent history tells a story.
Since last being a full-time starter for the Ravens in 2022 (played 14 games, logging 3.0 sacks and 26 total tackles), Pierre-Paul has been relegated to practice squads and depth roles, appearing in just nine games without a single start for the Saints and Dolphins in 2023 and the Buccaneers in 2025.
As of now, the Giants legend is a free agent. While he has expressed his desire to play a 16th season, his limited action in recent seasons and the questionable physical fitness at the age of 37 would raise eyebrows for a possible reunion at MetLife Stadium.
However, the two-time Super Bowl winner believes in living with a positive outlook on life and is focused on taking any chances life throws at him.
“I got 7½ fingers. You’re still living,” he said. “You get an opportunity every day to take that deep breath, taste that nice drink you want to taste? Getting a glass of milk or having coffee in the morning, whatever is your thing. You get another chance of it every day. So why not be great at what you got going on?”
The life-altering accident a decade ago is something Pierre-Paul will carry with him forever. However, he remains focused on the opportunity in front of him and wants to be the best version of himself.
