After three straight losses with Russell Wilson, Brian Daboll is rolling the dice on rookie Jaxson Dart in Week 4. But the quarterback switch isn’t the only thing Daboll revealed. In the next game, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will take full control of offensive play calling.

When asked about his involvement, Daboll made it clear Kafka will continue to call the plays. “No, I have confidence in Mike (Kafka),” Daboll said. He doubled down on that trust, adding, “Those guys have met with Jaxson [Dart] along with me, and they’ve met separately. We’re going to do everything we can to help Jaxson be as good as he can play.”

Now all eyes are on Kafka, who isn’t just any play-caller. He’s one of the league’s highest-paid coordinators, pulling in around $3 million a year. And he is already working on Dart. And Kafka had nothing but praise for the rookie. He pointed out how Dart already looked comfortable in the New York huddle, saying the young QB “did everything he needed to do in terms of operation and execution on the field.”

But Kafka isn’t promising anything long-term just yet. He knows Dart’s growth will be tested right away, especially against former Giants defensive mastermind Steve Spagnuolo. Spags is known for dialing up aggressive schemes, and that will push the rookie. Still, Kafka left the door open, hinting that Dart will keep getting cameos. “I think if it’s positive, I think it definitely helps, and if it’s negative, it’s just how you approach it,” Kafka said last week.

And that’s really the key. Dart’s value comes in how he responds. He has already shown that he can learn from every rep, whether good or bad, and use it to grow. So whether his next shot comes this week, next month, or down the line,
the rookie will be ready to grab it. The Dart situation also raises the question of what led Daboll to change his stance on Russell Wilson. Why Brian Daboll moves on to Jaxson Dart?
The Giants’ offense has been brutal in two of the first three games, leaving their fans frustrated. The lowlight came in Kansas City when Russell Wilson threw a ball into the tunnel during a red zone snap, then ended the drive by tossing it away on fourth down. That 22-9 loss to the Chiefs summed up the mess.

But Dart kept checking every box. He showed poise in the offseason, carried momentum through training camp, and looked sharp in preseason action. His ball placement stood out, and so did his decision-making. Most importantly, his toughness and mobility give New York an edge where it needs it most. The Giants sit near the bottom of the league in red zone scoring, and Dart’s skill set offers a fresh option.
At first, Daboll and Mike Kafka believed the team around Wilson was enough to win while Dart developed. But Wilson has looked like a shadow of his old self. Aside from one solid showing against Dallas, the veteran has struggled, and the Giants sit at 0-3. For Dart, this is a chance to grab the job outright. His athleticism could open up Kafka’s playbook the way it once did for Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City.
Now Wilson’s future hangs in the balance. Whether he stays as a backup or looks elsewhere is unclear. What is clear is that the Giants are all-in on Dart, hoping the 22-year-old can breathe life into an offense that badly needs it.
