There’s been a stir after New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll entered the blue medical tent during the game to check on quarterback Jaxson Dart. The league isn’t taking the matter lightly and is exploring ways to curb such situations. Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator understands Daboll’s actions and the concerns that led to the incident.

“He (Dart) is uber-talented. I understand why [Brian] Daboll went to the blue tent,” Robert Saleh said. He didn’t hesitate to declare that he may have done the same. “I probably would’ve gone too. The kid is good, man. I think New York hit on this one big-time.”

The DC spoke highly of Dart’s accuracy and revealed that he has watched the rookie on film and is impressed with what the coach and the front office have been able to do. “This kid is going to be special,” he said. While Daboll didn’t use the same words, the sentiment was the same when he opened up about the incident in the 34-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6.

The rookie was still in the tent getting checked for a concussion/head injury when both the coach and running back Cam Skattebo entered the tent. Daboll has clarified that he certainly didn’t want the rookie to play with an injury, but if Dart was healthy, the coach wants him out in the field quickly.

“I just wanted (Dart’s) a– out there if he was OK,” Daboll said. “So I was asking, ‘How long is it going to take?’ So again, you want your guy out there — not at risk of anything else. But, (the team doctor) came out, ‘I think he’s going to be good.’ I’m like, ‘Is he going to be good or not? I’m gonna call a timeout on fourth down and go for the (first down), you know?”

He was perhaps a bit impatient and concerned, especially since the Giants were finally seeing a spark with the rookie after a long struggle to find stability. He has posted just 8 touchdowns so far.

However, the league has remained strict about its concussion protocol and in-game injury assessments. It’s no surprise that a two-paragraph memo titled “Concussion Protocol Compliance Reminder” has been sent to all teams, two days after the incident.

There will be consequences when they aren’t upheld, just as the Giants were handed hefty fines.

Brian Daboll’s Giants take a $200,000 hit after the incident

As per the rules, only medical personnel are allowed in the tent or locker room when a player’s injury is examined for privacy. And coach Daboll clearly broke the rule. Even if he was simply concerned, this intrusion was unacceptable to the league. He was handed a $100,000 fine for his intrusion.

“In no way would I want a player to come back out there that wasn’t ready to play,” Daboll explained. “I think I have great respect for that process.”

The Giants’ owner, John Mara, also defended the coach but added that the league is right in its action. “While I firmly believe, as he has stated, that he was not trying to influence the process in any way,” he said. “He understands that the appearance of going to the tent is inappropriate.”

However, Daboll isn’t the only one to get fined. Skattebo was also fined $15,000 for his involvement. In addition, the Giants were also fined $200,000. The fine totals $315,000. This served as a clear reminder for all teams to avoid repeating such mistakes in the future.
