For ESPN host Laura Rutledge, the pain of losing someone close to her is not unfamiliar. She lost her younger brother, Alex, in a 2018 cave-diving accident and her furry little friend Remington, who died fighting cancer. So when an ABC News colleague opened up about his own battle with cancer, Rutledge made sure to send him a message of support.

“So glad you’re ok @willreeve_. Sharing this will most certainly help others. Amazed by @amandadubin’s strength as well,” shared Laura Rutledge on her Instagram story.

Rutledge’s message came after Will Reeve shared on Good Morning America about the difficult journey he had been facing since earlier this year. The 34-year-old ABC News correspondent revealed on 29 September that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in April, just months after marrying Amanda Dubin in January.

According to ABC News, the situation came to light after Reeve identified an unusual lump in his left testicle. His wife encouraged him to have it checked. He went for an ultrasound that confirmed the presence of a mass, which subsequently led to a surgical procedure in early May. Upon further evaluation, doctors diagnosed him with embryonal carcinoma, an aggressive form of testicular cancer.

His treatment did not end with the first procedure. Reeve underwent another major operation in June to remove dozens of lymph nodes from his abdomen. Some of those lymph nodes tested positive for cancer, forcing him to undergo two cycles of chemotherapy. He began chemotherapy in early July, with Amanda by his side.

The journey was emotional, considering Reeve’s family history. His father, Christopher Reeve, became paralyzed after a 1995 horseback-riding accident and later became an advocate for spinal cord injury research. His mother, Dana Reeve, died of lung cancer in 2006.

During his own treatment, Will thought about his mother, particularly while undergoing chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. By the end of July, he had completed his treatment and rung the bell at the hospital.

“Right off the top, I need everyone to know I am OK. But this summer, I had testicular cancer. The diagnosis was a shock, and the treatments, they were a slog, not to mention an unexpected test for us so soon after our wedding,” Reeve said on GMA.

“Today, though, I am relieved to announce that we have arrived at our destination, and this cancer is in the rearview mirror. But what a journey.”

Reeve has also spoken about the couple’s hopes of becoming parents and the steps they took to preserve their ability to have children after his diagnosis. For Reeve, however, sharing the experience has been more than documenting his own recovery. He wanted people to understand that testicular cancer can happen and encouraged greater awareness around it.

Rutledge understood his pain well. It’s been a year since she lost Remi. The couple spent 11 years with him. She even took to social media, sharing a heartfelt message for Remi.

Again, her brief tribute just highlighted both Reeve’s recovery and Amanda’s role throughout the journey, offering a warm show of support from one broadcaster to another as he continues sharing his story.
