The Washington Commanders are not sparing anything when it comes to covering all the offensive and defensive pieces in their roster. That’s one of the reasons why they went ahead and drafted the DT Jer’Zhan Newton to their roster. However, Dan Quinn and his decisions have raised some eyebrows because the team already has Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne in their arsenal.

Allen has been healthy throughout his tenure with the Washington Commanders and finished his 2023 season with 53 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. However, it seems like those numbers are not enough for the team and Adam Peters and Dan Quinn need to take a better look at their defensive roster. But despite all the apprehension, Peters assured that Allen is here to stay.

Adam Peters was questioned about the move he and Dan Quinn made in the off-season about signing Newton and what it entails for Jonathan Newton. Peters provided some clarity about how the team plans to use the DTs at their disposal. Safe to say that the team will utilize them individually and in juxtaposition at the same time. Newton has put up at least 50 total tackles in every season since 2021. This consistency coincides with Allen, who also had a 53-tackle season last year. Hence, utilising them would make the most sense, and Dan Quinn plans to do exactly the same.

“And then we can get them all on the field at the same time,” said Peters and added, “DQ has a vision to get them all on the field at the same time. So, it’s not like he’s going to be a backup and not playing a whole lot. He’s going to get on the field, he’s going to play. We’re going to rotate those guys. So, keep those guys fresh too.” It reflects the situation between Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr.

But coming back to Allen, he’s thought of Washington Commanders to be his home all along. He mentioned his desire to stay with the team for the foreseeable future since his contract renegotiation in 2021.

Why Jonathan Allen will want to stick with the Commanders for a long time

Allen was playing on his 5-year rookie deal in 2021 and was due for contract renegotiation at that point in his career. Ron Rivera, who was the head coach at the time, backed his importance in the team and attested to his leadership as well. Then, Allen was committed to the Commanders when he said, “I get paid to whoop people’s a**.”

But he had more reasons to stick to the team because he considered the Commanders as his home. “I want to be here. This is my home; this is where I want to be. This is where my family is from. I went to high school in this area. I want to be here. I’ve always had the dream of only playing for one team my entire career, and I really want to do that,” Allen said in a 2021 interview.

This statement reflects his commitment to the team and is probably the reason why Dan Quinn and Adam Peters want him around. There’s nothing wrong with having an additional net of safety to play with. Moreover, Dan Quinn and Peters have made it clear that they are interested in men of character, and people who know the game inside out.

Hence, adding Newton to the roster is an advantage rather than something to feel insecure about.
