With the NFL salary cap soaring to $255.4 million, it exceeded the conservative estimates that the New York Giants had been working with for their offseason plans by nearly $15 million. This unexpected development opened a significant opportunity for the Giants’ general manager. Suddenly, the prospect of bringing back Saquon Barkley appeared much more feasible than before.

The option of using the “franchise tag” on the RB was back on the table, according to Schoen. And there was even a bit more flexibility to explore signing him to a new contract. However, the final decision might ultimately rest with Barkley himself, who has consistently expressed his desire to remain a “Giant for life.” Yet, while the Giants’ financial situation has improved, the broader question of the value of running backs in the NFL remains unchanged. If Barkley continues to hold out for a deal that doesn’t align with the current market dynamics, it could complicate negotiations.

Will Saquon Barkley stick with the Giants?
Schoen spoke regarding Barkley and his deal during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday. “I wouldn’t say his value has changed, especially in the organization. He’s a captain, he’s a leader, he’s a hard worker. I think the world of Saquon and I still think he can play. So, my value for Saquon really hasn’t changed.”

Certainly, Barkley likely has a better understanding of the business realities. He had to go through multiple rounds of negotiations over a nine-month period in 2022-23 without reaching a long-term deal with the Giants. Their previous offer to him would have ensured approximately $23 million over the 2023 and 2024 seasons. That’s roughly equivalent to two franchise tags. Opting out, he played on a revised franchise tag deal last season, earning about $11 million in hopes of securing a larger payday now.

Barkley has voiced his desire for a “fair” deal. However, what’s deemed fair to him might prove too costly for the Giants. But the Giants sure would be worse off without him.

Do the Giants really need Barkley?
There’s no denying Barkley’s impact on the Giants. It’s evident that he’s not just their fan favorite and a key leader in their youthful locker room; he’s also proven to be their top performer when healthy. A dynamic and explosive RB like Barkley fundamentally alters their offensive strategy. His presence adds an extra layer of threat to QB Daniel Jones’ game, particularly evident back in 2022, as defenses grappled with the dilemma of defending against his versatile skills.

Last season, he missed three games due to a sprained ankle. This was the fourth instance of missing multiple games in his six-year NFL career. Additionally, his rushing and receiving production dipped, with only 962 rushing yards at 3.9 yards per carry and 41 receptions for 280 yards. Despite Barkley’s undeniable talent, the Giants must contend with a saturated market of free-agent running backs.

While acknowledging Barkley’s desire for a “fair deal,” Schoen emphasizes the franchise’s need to prioritize both short-term and long-term success. As they weigh their options, they’ll consider Barkley’s contributions alongside the broader market landscape.
