“Great Spot”: Drake Maye Reveals His Stance on Patriots After Meeting With HC Jerod Mayo

It seems like at least one of the top quarterbacks of this draft might have found his first home in the NFL. Drake Maye recently talked about the prospect of a landing spot in the New England Patriots at the NFL Combine. The dilemma of how to utilize their No.3 pick to the fullest seems to have found a resolution.
Maye revealed he’s leaning towards the Patriots to the reporters after talking with their new head coach, Jerod Mayo. The North Carolina QB was on the radar of many teams having top picks, including the Bears and the Commanders. Finally, Maye seems to have made a decision, and an old connection with Tom Brady might be the reason.

At the Combine, Maye talked at a press conference about his interview with the Patriots. The QB expressed that it went “great” and the team looks like a “great spot“ for his rookie season’s landing spot. He also mentioned Mayo, who replaced Belichick this year, and said that he enjoyed speaking to the head coach.

The Patriots had been contemplating interviewing Maye as a prospective rookie pick for quite some time. It was reported by the Athletic that the Patriots were planning to “question Maye” about “why his stats dipped in his final year as North Carolina’s starter.”

They were referring to his performance deterioration in 2023 with 24 touchdowns and 269 completions as compared to an impressive 2022 season with 38 touchdowns and 342 completions. As per Maye’s statements, it seems the Patriots were satisfied with his answers. As for the North Carolina player himself, he was “really impressed” with the team and also revealed an unexpected Brady connection.

Maye’s UNC connection with Tom Brady
The quarterback also revealed a connection with the Patriots because of his college. In the press conference, Maye said that Clyde Christensen from the University of North Carolina had coached Patriots’ heartthrob Tom Brady in the past. Christensen was a part of Tampa Bay when Brady was on the team, according to Mard Daniels.

If everything goes well, we can expect to see Maye as the new quarterback of New England. The UNC prospect rookie already has several sports analysts promoting him as the first overall pick by the Chicago Bears. It will be interesting to see if the Patriots continue to pursue Maye to replenish their roster for their 2024 season.
