Patrick Mahomes and Co. are prepping for Las Vegas. They will be going to the Super Bowl! They beat the Ravens in an uphill 10-17 battle. Winning over the best team in the AFC is no easy feat. Even if you are the Chiefs. This isn’t the Chiefs’ first appearance though. It’s their sixth! And they’ve made it to the big stage four times in the last five years.

If they snag the win on February 11, they’ll be joining the exclusive club of franchises with at least four Super Bowl victories. And the major credit goes to the QB leading the team.

Patrick Mahomes changed the Chiefs’ tide

Before Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs had only clinched two Super Bowls in 50 years. Fast forward to Mahomes’ era, and guess what? In six short years, they’ve added two more shiny trophies to their collection! As we gear up for the Super Bowl LVI rematch, let’s rewind the clock and delve into the Chiefs’ Super Bowl journey. In Super Bowl LVII, it turned into a high-scoring spectacle. Butker’s last-second field goal sealed the deal, and the Chiefs emerged victorious with a thrilling 38-35 win. And mention Mahomes snagged his second Super Bowl MVP.

Super Bowl LV wasn’t as kind to the Chiefs. That was despite being the best team in the NFL that season with a 14-2 record. Injuries to the offensive line and crucial drops led to a 31-9 defeat by the Buccaneers. That ended with Tom Brady claiming his historic seventh ring.

In the inaugural Super Bowl I on Jan. 15, 1967, the Chiefs faced the Packers but suffered a 35-10 defeat. QB Len Dawson was sacked six times! And the Chiefs’ offense struggled on third down. Fun fact: it was the Chiefs’ owner who gave the final game of the season its name. It struck Lamar Hunt after he saw his daughter playing with a “super ball”, a bouncy toy popular with children.

The Chiefs marked their triumphant return to the Super Bowl against an NFC North foe, defeating Minnesota 23-7 on Jan. 11, 1970. Despite being involved in a federal gambling investigation, quarterback Len Dawson maintained his composure and earned Super Bowl MVP. The defining play, “65 Power Toss Trap,” orchestrated by head coach Hank Stram, sealed the victory with a touchdown from running back Mike Garrett.
