Former Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez is caught up in a mess, facing a newly upgraded Level 5 felony battery charge after things reportedly got heated with a truck driver. At this point, everything’s up in the air, from what happens next in court to whether he’ll ever be back in the Fox Sports booth. But for now, Sanchez just picked up a small win.

On Thursday, Sanchez filed a motion asking to travel outside Indiana while he waits for his pretrial conference on November 5. And on Friday, Judge Jennifer Prinz Harrison gave him the green light while making it clear that Sanchez will need to be fingerprinted and processed before he can pack his bags.

Now, let’s talk about how this fiasco unfolded. Early Saturday morning, the ex-Jets QB got into a heated confrontation with a 69-year-old truck driver named Perry Tole, and it ended with Sanchez being left with stab wounds. But surprisingly, he’s not being treated as the victim here.

According to Tole’s account, things escalated fast. He claims Sanchez forcefully entered his truck and slammed him to the ground during the altercation. In response, Tole says he used pepper spray to fend him off. And when that didn’t stop him, he pulled a knife to defend himself. The whole fight reportedly started over a parking spot. Court documents and a probable cause affidavit detail that Sanchez allegedly shoved Tole, blocked him from calling for help, and refused to back off after pepper spray was deployed. The incident was also captured on multiple angles of surveillance video, per authorities.

However, on Monday, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced the battery charge was being upgraded to a felony charge of battery involving serious bodily injury, which carries a potential sentence of one to six years in prison. Prosecutors said new medical information about Tole’s injuries, including a deep laceration through his cheek, justified the escalation.

Sanchez, who’s now 38, is facing some serious legal trouble. If convicted of the battery charge, he could be looking at up to six years behind bars. And it doesn’t end there. In addition to criminal charges, Tole has filed a civil lawsuit against both Sanchez and Fox Corporation. The complaint seeks damages for “severe permanent disfigurement, loss of function, emotional distress, and other physical injuries.” The suit even accuses Fox of negligent hiring, retention, and failure to supervise Sanchez, alleging the network “knew or should have known of Sanchez’s unfitness as an employee.”

Sanchez, for his part, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include the battery charge, public intoxication, and unlawful entry of a vehicle. His legal team has not publicly commented on the civil suit. It’s messy, and the questions around what happens next are piling up, including what this means for his job with Fox Sports.

Mark Sanchez’s Fox future is up in the air

Sanchez expectedly didn’t appear in the booth for Sunday’s RaidersColts broadcast. He’s still recovering from the stabbing that initially left him in critical condition. But Fox has yet to comment on his future. The plan for that game was actually for him to call it alongside Chris Myers instead of his usual partner, Adam Amin, who was covering the ALDS between the Tigers and Mariners. Once Sanchez was ruled out, Brady Quinn stepped in for him.

For the near future, Fox is filling the Sanchez slot with three-time Super Bowl champ Mark Schlereth, who’ll be taking over at least for the next few weeks. The network’s been pretty tight-lipped since the whole thing happened. The only public statement so far came Saturday, when Fox confirmed Sanchez was “stable and recovering” after the stabbing.

On Sunday’s NFL pregame show, host Curt Menefee briefly addressed the situation. He said that Sanchez was “involved in an incident that, to be honest, we’re all trying to wrap our heads around.” And during the broadcast in Indianapolis, Myers chimed in. ” We send out our thoughts and prayers to Mark and those involved in Friday’s incident,” he said.

Fox only has five NFL games on the slate for Week 6. So, the network can easily keep Sanchez off the air for a bit while this all shakes out. But the real question is what happens once the dust settles. If Sanchez clears things up in court and recovers fully, will Fox bring him back to the booth? Time will tell.
