The Pittsburgh Steelers could be looking at dark days ahead. At 7-6 so far this season, they do not look like the team that holds the record for the most number of Super Bowl wins, along with the New England Patriots. Speaking of the Patriots, the team entered the stadium to face off against the Steelers at 2-10 and were the second-worst team in the entire league. And yet, by some miracle, they managed to win over the Steelers 21-18.

Steelers’ fans are demanding answers for the defeat and how the team hopes to undo the damage of a mediocre season. Will pulling the plug on Head Coach Mike Tomlin be the final solution?

Mike Tomlin hasn’t managed to lead the Steelers to the playoffs in the last six seasons. And in his last 16 seasons, he has just won 4 playoff games. Not to appear pessimistic, but it seems like he is only going to extend this abysmal record. However, the final nail in the coffin was last Thursday Night Football, when they lost to a 2-10 team for the second consecutive time. In the week preceding the Pats game, they had lost to the 2-9 Arizona Cardinals.

During the post-game media interaction, Tomlin blamed the “turnover component” and that they needed to put up a tougher fight in the second half. But apparently, he has his fair share of believers as well. Kimberly A. Martin, an analyst for ESPN’s First Take, came out in support and said that any team would be happy to have him should the Steelers choose to part ways with him.

And it seems that the Steelers ownership is with Martin on this one. They seem reluctant to show the door to Mike Tomlin, under whom the Steelers have not had a losing season in 16 years.

Why there’s still hope for the head coach

Even as some analysts predict that his streak of not recording a losing season is coming to an end, the problem might lie elsewhere. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky was also not at his best on Thursday. The Steelers had hoped that after taking the drastic step of firing offensive coordinator Matt Canada, the team would finally start performing better. But as the last two weeks have shown, things have gone further downhill.

Tomlin’s contract with the Steelers will come to an end after the 2024 season, and the ownership has shown no inclination so far that they want to extend his contract. If the Steelers do not make it to the playoffs this season, it is reasonable to assume that Rooney will not want the head coach in his team any longer.

Maybe it’s time for the Steelers to take a down year so that they can rebuild their roster from the ground up next season.

I am a hardcore believer in the ?Mamba Mentality?, which certainly applies to the NFL. The sport is not just about physical prowess but also demands a powerful mindset. Growing up, I spent time with athletes on the neighborhood soccer field.
