So, what compels someone to drop millions on a sports franchise? It takes an awful lot of money, and then after you’re done, you have to keep pumping more in. You spend millions on the best players, millions more on coaches and support staff, and you fly your team up and down the country.

But maybe the thrill of watching your guys win championships is worth it. Every victory brings its own high, and of course, you can’t forget the value of a “brand” in this day and age. With sports being pretty much the only reason even to own a TV anymore, you’ll earn some of that investment back off a slice of the broadcasting rights too. But is it enough? It certainly was for Stan Kroenke, owner of the Rams.

What is Stan Kroenke’s net worth?

There are no two ways of saying it: Stan Kroenke is filthy rich. There are not a lot of sports team owners around, with how expensive it is, but he’s the 8th richest one in America. At a whopping $16.9 billion, he is tied for the 45th richest American according to the Forbes 400.

He built his wealth as a real estate and sports mogul. So, the Rams aren’t the only team in Kroenke’s sports empire. He also owns the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Rapids, and Colorado Avalanche. And that’s not all. Across the Atlantic, his ‘Arsenal Holdings plc’ controls Arsenal F.C. and Arsenal W.F.C. With such a diverse portfolio, Kroenke’s sports holdings are estimated to be worth around $13 billion, making them a substantial part of his overall wealth.

Besides that, he’s also one of the largest landowners in America. He’s got more than a whopping 1.6 million acres of ranches up and down the continent. Well, that’s not including his real estate holdings – about 60 million feet or so. And the bulk of that is concentrated in shopping plazas near Walmarts! This makes sense since he’s married to Ann Walton Kroenke, a billionaire heiress from the Walton family, who owns Walmart.

How much are the Rams worth?

You might have noticed we haven’t been calling them the Los Angeles Rams. That’s because they weren’t that when he bought them. He bought a 30% stake way back in 1995 when they were the St. Louis Rams. He became the sole owner of the franchise after the majority owner passed away in 2010. At the time, the Rams were valued at $750 million.

The shock move to Los Angeles in 2016 angered fans from Missouri, but it’s skyrocketed the team’s value. Of course, the 2021 Super Bowl win didn’t hurt either. The value of the team has gone up more than 10 times, to about $7.6 billion. The annual revenue of $756 million by itself outstrips the initial price of purchase.

In this case, it was certainly an investment that paid off for Kroenke. Despite the Rams’ abysmal performance so far this season, Kroenke’s bet came off good.
