Ahead of Week 3, several players were fined for their actions and gestures in the Week 2 game, even if those weren’t flagged by the officials during the game. Tight end Travis Kelce and running back Saquon Barkley were fined. Now, the Jaguars were no exception, with one of their players getting fined a 4 figure amount.

Jaguars linebacker Yasir Abdullah was fined $6,229 for the wrong use of his helmet during a Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. This was when he made contact with kick returner Samaje Perine. Bengals beat writer Jay Morrison reported the news on X, while the league’s Gameday Accountability has all the names from Week 2.

Jacksonville’s Yasir Abdullah was fined $6,229 for a use of helmet infraction against #Bengals kick returner Samaje Perine,” he wrote on X. This is not surprising since the league has enforced strict rules with serious consequences. Think of defensive tackle Jalen Carter!

Yasir Abdullah was hit with a fine for improper use of his helmet during contact with Bengals returner Samaje Perine. The penalty reflects the NFL’s continued emphasis on player safety and proper tackling techniques. He had only one tackle during the game and for the entire season.

Fortunately, the Jaguars had just one player getting fined after their Week 2. The DE will look to avoid such troubles now, while helping the Jaguars to lead after their disappointing 31-27 loss to the Bengals. But Abdullah isn’t the only one. There are other players and one on the opposite side who was fined massively for his unnecessary roughness as per the rules.

With over 13:00 remaining in the fourth quarter, Bengals defensive end Joseph Ossai grabbed the facemask of Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington while attempting a tackle. Although the Jaguars only gained two yards on the play, the penalty gave Jacksonville a first down. And as per the rules, the punishment for Ossai didn’t end there.

He is fined $11,593, which is the first time in his career. Barkley was fined for the same reason, and he was fined $46,371 as a third-time offender. Ossai is also the first Bengals player to get fined this season.

As for the Jaguars, they will face the Houston Texans in Week 3, and the team can’t look to make the same mistakes as before. And Coach Liam Coen is likely moving in the same direction.

Are NFL fines for helmet infractions too harsh, or necessary for player safety?

Liam Coen and the Jaguars make big roster moves

The Jaguars have once again elevated tight end Quintin Morris from the practice squad to the active roster. This is the second of Morris’ three allowable practice squad elevations for the season. This explains that his experience and versatility have been reliable for the team.

Morris provides depth to a roster that currently lists just three tight ends. While Morris’ main contributions are expected on special teams, he played 17 snaps across four different phases in Week 2 as per PFF.

Notably, left guard Ezra Cleveland is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Cleveland’s potential presence is critical for the Jaguars’ offensive line depth. The team has nine offensive linemen on its 53-man roster, but guard Wyatt Milum has already been ruled out.

Without Cleveland, the Jaguars would be left with just seven healthy linemen, forcing a reduction in the total number of active players on game day from 48 to 47. This could limit flexibility in other areas of the roster.

By elevating Morris while keeping Cleveland available, the team is better positioned and maintains stability along the offensive front.
