Liam Coen has completely flipped the script for a Jaguars team that looked flat and uninspired just a year ago. Now they’re sitting at 4-1 after a gutsy 31-28 comeback win over the Chiefs. But don’t mistake that success for complacency. Liam Coen’s already tightening every screw he can find. And his first step was pulling the trigger on a trade with Cleveland.

As reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Jaguars have finalized a deal with the Browns involving a swap of cornerbacks. “Trade! The #Jaguars are sending CB Tyson Campbell to the #Browns for CB Greg Newsome,” he wrote on X.

Campbell, just 25, is still under contract through 2028 after that massive extension he signed last season. The former No. 33 overall pick out of Georgia had started all five games this season for Jacksonville, racking up six pass breakups and forcing a fumble along the way.

And to be fair, Campbell hasn’t exactly been bad. Through five games, he’s totaled 32 tackles, held his own in run support, and done pretty well in coverage too. Opposing QBs have completed just 19 of 37 passes thrown his way, averaging 16.4 yards per catch, and he’s added another pass breakup to the mix.

Since joining the Jaguars, Campbell’s been a staple in the secondary. mes, 59 starts, six interceptions, 42 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and two recoveries. But he also hasn’t picked off a pass since 2023. Still, his production and reliability make him one of the better young corners out there.

Trading Campbell clears the four-year, $76.5 million extension the Jaguars handed him in 2024. It’s hard not to see this as a financial play more than a football one. But this isn’t the first time the Jags and Browns have done business recently.

Earlier this year, on draft night, they pulled off another massive swap. Cleveland sent the No. 2 overall pick to Jacksonville in exchange for picks No. 5, No. 36, No. 126, and a 2026 first-rounder. And now, here they are again. But did Liam Coen get it right this time?

Did Liam Coen get it right with Greg Newsome?

Greg Newsome, who comes over from Cleveland, is still on his rookie deal and playing out his fifth-year option. That means he’ll hit free agency in 2026, and he’s set to make $13.38 million next year. A much lighter financial hit compared to Campbell’s big-money deal. From a cap standpoint, that’s a clear win for the Jaguars.

On the field, Newsome’s been quietly solid for the Browns this season. Lining up on the outside, he’s allowed 15 completions on 23 targets for 13 yards. He’s a year younger than Campbell.

He’s also been the subject of trade rumors for a while now, and just when he was putting together one of his better starts, Cleveland decided to pull the trigger. Well, good for him. He goes from a last-place AFC North team to a 4-1 Jaguars squad that’s looking like a title contender.

Financially, the Jaguars got it absolutely right. Production-wise, it’s a little closer. Campbell has been the more impactful player to this point, but Newsome brings flexibility, youth, and an arguably higher ceiling. It’s one of those trades that might not have an immediate winner.
