Hours after their season ended and dropped nukes, the Jets’ outgoing head coach said, “I wanna thank the players because of the locker room. They finished in a way that they all should be proud of…for that, I’m forever grateful.” Before this, he also thanked the franchise owner and the GM.

The major questions Jeff Ulbrich faced were about his season and managing two roles- the HC and defensive coordinator. Clearing the air about his mistakes as much as he could, Ulbrich said, “It’s one of those things were, you know, as I spoke on the thing before. The continuity was my paramount issue. And I wanted to make sure, from a coaching staff perspective, we stayed much the course as we had going into the season.” Maybe, carrying out both roles was a bit too much for him.

Ulbrich also didn’t miss talking about his future head coaching jobs. With the Jets’ head coaching position up for grabs, the franchise is abuzz with interviews. The pressure is palpable. And, among the many contenders, is Mike Vrabel, whose experience as the Titans’ head coach makes him a serious candidate. On this note, Ulbrich said, “I don’t know if I do anything different this season. What I do know is if I get an opportunity to be a head coach, I would not be a head coach coordinator. I would not coordinate the defense.” He knows deep inside, that was a mistake he wouldn’t repeat in the future.

Ulbrich has been the Jets’ defensive coordinator for three years from 2021 to 2024. But when the franchise fired HC Robert Saleh, the following week 5. He further continued, “And there is time definitely being a head coach can get in the way of defense for me and vice versa.” That one is the bold statement and indirect message to the franchise. Moreover, the interim head coach has served the Jets for more than four years. Hence, there is quite a big opportunity for him for the next season.
