The New York Jets won a football game two weeks ago. Their first of the season, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 39-38. And they did it without their leading receiver, Garrett Wilson. This week, they have the perfect opportunity to grab their second win of the season against the 2-7 Browns, and they might finally have Wilson back.

Head coach Aaron Glenn had some encouraging news on Monday. “He’s going to practice this week, so I’m looking forward to him getting out and practicing. Let’s see how that goes during the week. I don’t want to place too much on him right now, but I’m excited about him getting out there and being able to practice,” he said about Wilson.

Wilson hyperextended his knee in Week 6 against the Broncos and hasn’t played since. He sat out the next two games and then benefited from the bye week. Before the injury, he was the Jets’ most productive offensive weapon by a wide margin: 56 targets, 36 catches, 395 yards, and four touchdowns in six games.

To put that in context, the next closest receiver, Mason Taylor, has 29 receptions for 242 yards and a single touchdown. No one else on the roster has scored more than once. And that’s with Wilson missing the last two games. The gap between him and the other receivers on the roster is quite large.

And that’s why Aaron Glenn isn’t the only one to be excited about Wilson’s potential return. “We’ve definitely missed him, but guys have done a great job of stepping up, like Tyler Johnson last week. But having him back, he’s a weapon in the offense, so it’d be huge,” guard Joe Tippmann said.
“Whenever he gets back, I don’t expect there to be much of an adaptation period. I think he’s going to step in and be himself right away. So it’ll be great to have him back whenever that is and we’re excited about it,” tight end Jeremy Ruckert said, echoing the excitement. But his return would probably be clouded by the doubts over the quarterback situation.
Jets’ ambiguous quarterback situation
Two weeks ago, Jets owner Woody Johnson made headlines for all the wrong reasons after some pointed comments about quarterback Justin Fields. “It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that we got,” he said. He kept adding on to it, saying that “if we could just complete a pass, it would look good.”

Justin Fields responded to him on the pitch by delivering arguably his best performance of the season against the Bengals, going 21/32, racking up a touchdown, and throwing zero interceptions. You’d expect him to retain his position after that performance, but according to Aaron Glenn, it’s all up in the air for now.
But head coach Aaron Glenn isn’t ready to make anything official just yet. “You know I’m not going to give you that answer. The thing is, you’ll find out soon who our starting quarterback will be. And Justin did a Hell of a job against Cincinnati. But, you know, I’m going to keep that close to the vest,” he said.
Of course, anyone who’s followed Glenn’s press conferences knows this is nothing new. He doesn’t tip his hand on personnel decisions, even when they seem obvious. And this one does. Fields played well enough to keep the job, and if Glenn wanted to make a switch to Tyrod Taylor, he likely would’ve done it already.
Justin Fields is still likely to start against the Browns.
