The New York Jets have brought in a new regime to kickstart another rebuild. Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey were installed to give the Jets a new identity that they have lacked throughout their 14-season playoff drought. And the first thing they did was to get rid of Aaron Rodgers. Maybe in a bit of a harsh way, showing disrespect to the future Hall of Famer, but the Jets did what needed to be done without any hard feelings. They brought in Justin Fields from Pittsburgh, a young QB, in hopes of building the offense around him. And now they are possibly looking to bring him a weapon that can make the Jets an instant threat on offense.
One of the Jets’ priorities this offseason was to avoid the leaks. Their new head coach and general manager have repeatedly stated that they want to move quietly to rebuild their roster. Focus on building a rapport with those you want before someone else from another franchise gets to them. But it seems those efforts didn’t bear fruit when it came to their interest in the No.1 tight end in this year’s draft class.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, “They did recently and quietly have Penn State’s Tyler Warren in for a visit, and there are certain members of their organization who are said to be enamored with the player many consider to be the top tight end in this class.” Tyler Warren, who used to play QB in his high school, wreaked havoc in college as a tight end. At Penn State, he broke the school’s TD record held by a tight end by scoring 22 TDs. In his last season with the Nittany Lions, Warren was simply unstoppable.

He caught 104 passes for 1,233 yards and scored 8 TDs on his way to winning the John Mackay Award. Warren didn’t just contribute on the air. He even chimed in with 4 rushing TDs on the back of 218 rushing yards. His incredible athleticism and versatility make him a top-10 prospect in this year’s draft. And with the Jets having a No. 7 overall pick, they can easily bring Warren to New York. Tyler can give Fields a large and reliable presence on the field.

Considering the Jets allowed their starting TE from last year, Tyler Conklin, to sign with the Chargers. Gang Green does need a strong, tight end to fill the gap. And who else but Warren, standing at 6-foot-6, 256 pounds. But if not Warren at No.7, then the Jets are predicted to pick a top cornerback to strike a deadly duo with Sauce Gardner.
Jets to target reigning Jim Thorpe Award winner at No.7 overall
Of course, the Jets Nation will be expecting their franchise to pick from a QB, WR, or TE at No.7. But if an offensive route ain’t followed, the Jets are predicted to land the No.1 cornerback prospect in this year’s draft. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said, “If the Jets target the other side of the ball, some people around the league believe Glenn could target a cornerback, with Texas’ Jahdae Barron as an option.” Glenn, who played 15 seasons as a cornerback in the NFL, showing interest in a cornerback as his possible first pick as a first-time head coach, isn’t surprising.

What’s your perspective on:
Is Tyler Warren the missing piece to make the Jets' offense a powerhouse, or is Barron the safer bet?
Have an interesting take?
But setting aside the emotional bits. Jahdae Barron is a massive talent coming off a sensational senior season with the Longhorns. It saw him post 67 tackles, 11 pass breakups and 5 INTs, on his way to winning the Jim Thorpe Award. Obviously, the Jets already have Sauce Gardner in their secondary. However, they need someone to replace DJ Reed, who left for the Lions this offseason. So, drafting Barron at No.7 wouldn’t be questioned.
Barron also possesses a unique versatility to his game. Throughout his college career, he has lined up in the slot, outside coverage and also as a safety. Those outstanding athleticism and instincts to judge the flight of a ball even earned him a career-high 5 INTs last year and an All-American honor. So, only time will tell whether the Jets pick Tyler Warren or Jahdae Barron. Both are predicted to be top of their draft class. Making the Jets’ choice at No.7 more difficult to predict.
