The New York Jets are running out of lifelines. Six games in, and they’re staring at an ugly 0–6 record. Last Sunday made it worse. Justin Fields played one of his worst games as a pro, nine sacks, negative ten passing yards, and not a single touchdown in sight. The offense looked lost. And now, one ex-Jets legend is calling for a change, urging Aaron Glenn to sit Fields down.

Boomer Esiason didn’t sugarcoat a thing. To him, the turning point was obvious. “They should have benched [Fields] yesterday at halftime. Put Tyrod Taylor in the game for the second half,” Esiason said. And honestly, he had a point. Fields’ inability to move the ball or even sustain a drive kept the Jets in quicksand.

Not only that, Fields held the ball for a longer time. Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos’ defense was elite. Nine sacks. Fifty-five yards lost. Zero rhythms. It was a beatdown. So Esiason added, “He mentally locked up yesterday for some reason, and I don’t know why. Only they know why. But that was when Aaron Glenn, if they were going to win a game, it would’ve been yesterday had he changed the quarterback.” That’s a tough call-out.

Despite that, Glenn is still standing behind his quarterback. “Come on, man. What kind of question is that?” Glenn said when asked if Fields would start Week 7. “There (are) a number of guys that — I mean, sometimes this league is like this, and there are guys that have bad games. That doesn’t mean you just bench them. Come on, you know better than that.”

Even before the meltdown, Fields wasn’t exactly elite, but he wasn’t terrible either. Sitting 18th in QBR at 94.2, he looked like he was slowly finding rhythm. Then came Sunday. The Jets, already ranked 20th in scoring and 24th in total offense, somehow managed to look worse than the numbers.
So, for now, Fields remains the guy. Tyrod Taylor and rookie Brady Cook wait in the wings. So we’ll see if Glenn’s belief pays off — or if it costs the Jets their last bit of hope. Either way, something’s got to give soon in the Big Apple.

Aaron Glenn wants Justin Fields to improve
The Jets’ offense hit rock bottom on Sunday. And even Aaron Glenn, who’s stood behind Fields through every rough patch this season, couldn’t keep his cool. “Listen, I didn’t think he was bad at all. I actually thought he did some pretty good things in those four games. In this fifth game, he took a step back. I’m with you guys 100 percent. And we can’t have that,” the head coach said. That’s as close to frustration as Glenn has sounded all year.

Even then, Glenn is staying loyal, at least for now. “And we have to get better than that. And he knows that, and he knows that better than anyone. So I don’t think you try to bench a player after having one true bad game. Because I thought the other games he played fairly well,” Glenn added.
Still, there’s a limit to patience in the Big Apple. Another showing like that, and Glenn might have to make the tough call. Tyrod Taylor has been around, seen it all, and even started back in Week 3. And if Fields slips again, Gang Green could be turning to the vet a lot sooner than anyone expected.
