The New York Jets hit a new low on Sunday, dropping to their fifth consecutive loss with a 37-22 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys in week 5. With the Titans and Saints pulling off upset wins, the Jets now stand alone as the NFL’s only winless team this season. Though holding a 0-5 Jets squad in check won’t silence critics of Dallas’ defense that entered the game ranked last in yards allowed, it certainly piles up more misery for the early stages of the Glenn-Fields era.

The Cowboys brought the heat all afternoon, keeping continuous pressure on Jets QB Justin Fields. Experts also weighed in after this disastrous early campaign with a message for the 26-year-old. “Scheme does take time, but effort and being invested in your work and attention to detail, that’s a man vs. man thing,” former NFL guard Willie Colon said. Colon signals that Fields should cooperate with head coach Aaron Glenn‘s tactics and approach. It will be Fields’ efforts and Glenn’s playcalling ability that’ll be crucial in getting the Jets their first win of the season.

Glenn knows Justin Fields well. Back when Glenn was calling the shots on the defense in Detroit Lions and Fields was leading the Chicago Bears, they faced off plenty of times. Now they’re on the same side, and their connection will be the key to moving forward. “I do believe that, because you want to be wired a certain way as far as how you think the game should be going, especially in game management situations,” Glenn said earlier in the season.

One of the biggest knocks on Fields in the NFL has been his tendency to hold onto the ball too long. According to Next Gen Stats, his average time to throw was 2.90 seconds. This was the reason why he had a bittersweet outing against Dallas. He went 32 of 46 passes for 283 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no picks, adding 26 rushing yards to 7 carries. And it’s not just Fields who’s dealing with a tough start to the season.

Aaron Glenn now has an embarrassing record to his name

Aaron Glenn and the Jets are making history, but not the kind that New York wants. We’re only five games in, and they have managed to register a humiliating record. With Sunday’s loss, the former Pro Bowl cornerback who spent 8 of his 15 NFL seasons in New York, became the first coach in the franchise history to start his tenure 0-5. “And we’re going to figure out as a team, we’re going to figure out how to get out of this hole,” he said after the game.

The Jets have employed 19 full-time head coaches over six-plus decades. But after the Cowboys’ matchup, Glenn etched his name in the history books, though not in the way he’d wanted. He was introspective and largely took the responsibility for the team’s disastrous start. It is New York’s third such beginning in the past 30 years. He also tried to push back the critics who claimed that this is the “same old Jets” and was clear that building takes time and patience, something the Jets fans have very little of these days.

Another reason for the fans to be furious over the franchise is their 14-year playoff drought, the longest in the NFL. But the struggles go beyond the scoreboard. According to ESPN Research, the Jets are the first team in NFL history to have no takeaways in any of their first five games since turnovers were first tracked in 1933.

With New York’s fourth 0-5 start (first since 0-13 in 2020 under Adam Gase), Glenn, the defensive-minded coach, has witnessed his historic lows. The team is yielding 31.7 points per game and is on pace to allow the most points in franchise history. But despite these numbers, there is a way that the Jets can remain relevant. With Fields remaining supportive of Glenn’s playcalling, the Jets might have a shot at bouncing back.
