The New York Jets can’t seem to stay out of their own mess. They are sitting at 0-7 and have become the talk of the league for all the wrong reasons. Recently, owner Woody Johnson threw a verbal jab at QB Justin Fields while defending his new head coach, Aaron Glenn. And now, Fields has finally broken his silence.

When the 26-year-old was asked if he was aware of Johnson’s comment, he said, “I wasn’t. I’m not on social media. It doesn’t bother me. Everybody knows I need to play better, we need to play better as a team, but it doesn’t matter how the offense does as a unit. I’m gonna get the blame,” the quarterback said while talking to media.

“That’s what comes with the job…so you can’t let anything kind of affect your mind, my mind. No matter if it’s him, no matter if it’s family members, even teammates sometimes. There’s going to be times where you have to be the only one who believes in yourself. That’s his opinion,” the player added. So what did Woody Johnson say about Fields?

Johnson said, “It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he’s got. I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving. …You have to play consistently at that position, and that’s what we’re going to try to do for the remainder of the season.”

In Week 7, the Jets lost 13-6, but the major headline Fields was benched at halftime. He completed 6 passes in 12 attempts for 46 yards and sacked 3 times against the Carolina Panthers.

Backup Tyrod Taylor stepped in, but nothing changed. The offense mustered only three points the rest of the way. Even worse, the Jets haven’t found the end zone in two straight games. Seven touchdowns in six weeks, that says it all.

However, Johnson also added that the quarterback call is “completely up to” coach Glenn. So what’s his take on the QB situation?

Justin Fields has to wait to know his status

In the recent presser, Aaron Glenn already knows who will start at QB in Sunday’s matchup against the Bengals. But he’s not about to spill it just yet. “We’ll have a quarterback on Sunday, I will tell you that,” Glenn said with a grin.

Then Glenn addressed owner Woody Johnson’s recent comments. “Woody puts that in my hand as far as who plays,” Glenn said. “I don’t see that changing. He trusts me to make that decision, he made a comment, and he has every right to that comment.”

He further added that Woody’s criticism was not just for Fields only. “That comment was actually said by a number of guys, including our quarterback, as far as the efficiency of how we play. We’re not gonna fight that. We understand that we have to get better, we do. I don’t think there’s anywhere in that comment where he said he doesn’t like Justin.”

However, the numbers don’t help Fields’ case. Right now he sits at a career-low 32.1 Total QBR. And in his six starts, he is also 31st among 33 qualified passers. Week 1 offered some promise, but since then, it’s been downhill.

The Jets bet big on Fields with a two-year, $40 million deal back in March. They wanted him to be the guy to steady this offense. Now, that patience is wearing thin. The Green and White need a spark, and fast. Let’s see how Glenn and co. play in Week 8.
