Joshua Dobbs respects Brock Purdy. And what could be greater than this is that he finds his new home in the San Francisco 49ers, very close to Purdy. Since his draft in 2017, Josh Dobbs has experienced a remarkable journey in the NFL. He began his career with the Steelers but later moved to the Jaguars, although he never played a game with them.

After being waived by the Jags, he returned to the Steel City, briefly joining the Browns. He then later joined the Lions’ practice squad in 2022 before briefly playing for the Titans, where he made two starts on short notice. Dobbs then again returned to the Browns after being traded to the Cardinals, where he finally got a chance to start for a while. After that, he was traded to the Vikings last year but eventually got benched. Recently, he has been with his dream team, the Niners, as a backup to Purdy, whom he respects a lot.

In a recent interview on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Josh Dobbs, also known as Passtronaut, revealed why he wanted to be the 49er. But before that, he praised Brock Purdy, expressing, “He plays like efficient football, like we played him in Arizona, and that’s why I would respect him so much. I think we only stopped him once. I think it was like 31 or 34, 300 yards, and a couple touchdowns.

Passtronaut continued, “Now he does have a great cast, but at the end of the day, like he has to be the decision-maker and the driving force of the offense, and the way he makes good decisions, takes care of the football, and plays, just efficient, clean football. He might not go out there and make the wow play all the time, but he’s going to go out there and put his team in a great position to be successful, and that’s what you have to do, especially in the Shanahan offense.”

Dobbs respected Purdy’s ability to lead the offense, praising his performance despite facing criticism. The backup QB also expressed excitement about joining the 49ers and contributing to the team while learning from Purdy and the coaching staff. He believes that being part of such a team will benefit him and looks forward to the upcoming season.

It’s clear that Dobbs is more than excited to join the Niners and Purdy. That aside, how much is he really needed for the franchise at the moment?

Josh Dobbs, in the same podcast, emphasized the importance of finding stability and development opportunities. He highlighted his desire to join a team with a consistent front office, coaching staff, and a strong quarterback development program. Dobbs expressed his eagerness to have a full offseason to learn a new offensive scheme and build rapport with his teammates. Despite acknowledging that he is still in the learning process, he is excited to be part of a well-respected coaching staff and to contribute to the team in whatever role he is given. Dobbs also praised the success of the 49ers in recent years, particularly their two Super Bowl appearances, and expressed enthusiasm about being part of the team’s culture. Similarly, the 49ers have found the backup they were looking for. The franchise has had quite a variety of quarterbacks in their lineup previously with Purdy, ranging from Jimmy Garoppolo to rookies like Trey Lance.

Now, with the addition of Dobbs, they have a mix of talent at different stages of their careers. Dobbs, as a backup QB, has demonstrated that he can step up and perform effectively when called upon. While the team ideally wants their starting QB to stay healthy and play all the games, having a reliable backup like Dobbs is essential, especially for a team with aspirations of contending for the championship. Should the starting QB sustain an injury, Dobbs has demonstrated his ability to maintain the team’s competitiveness. For instance, last year, “Josh Dobbs said that Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell was essentially translating calls and mapping out plays mid-huddle, as the play clock was ticking down. KOC called Dobbs’ ability to handle it all one of the most impressive things he’d seen in his career.”
