The Los Angeles Chargers’ hunt for a new offensive coordinator appears to have ended. After the team parted ways with Greg Roman a week ago, a fresh update finally emerged amid their ongoing conversations with former Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel. According to renowned insiders, the deal is final until a change of heart occurs, as the former HC has made his plans clear to stay in LA by deleting others.

“Former Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel is expected to become the Chargers offensive coordinator barring a change of heart, per @JeffDarlington and me,” insider Adam Schefter wrote on X. “McDaniel has informed other teams that they’re out, the Chargers clearly want him, and the two sides are having dinner tonight. But the expectation across the league is that McDaniel will be staying in LA.”

Hiring Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator could be a major boost for the Los Angeles Chargers. Despite being fired by the Miami Dolphins after a 7–10 season, his overall time with the team showcased commendable results. He finished with a 35–33 record in four seasons and led Miami to the playoffs in his first two years. The 2023 season also saw his offense lead the NFL in total yards.

McDaniel is known as one of the NFL’s best offensive thinkers. His approach relies on speed, spacing, and creativity, which helps quarterbacks make quicker and safer decisions. A perfect example of this was seen with QB Tua Tagovailoa, who threw for an NFL-high 4,624 yards in 2023 and had the most productive seasons of his career.

McDaniel comes from the West Coast offense and the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree. This brings modern passing concepts that can stretch defenses. Such an approach stands to be a need of the hour as the system leaned heavily on power football and lacked balance under Greg Roman. The passing game was generally outdated, and defenses were able to sit on short routes and stack the box. While things now appear to be quite sorted for the Chargers, it only became visibly possible after McDaniel denied the Browns Job.

Reports unveil McDaniel’s decision to withdraw his name from the Browns’ role

Reports from NFL Media revealed that Mike McDaniel has officially withdrawn his name from the Cleveland Browns head coaching search. According to the report, McDaniel informed the Browns of his decision before a scheduled interview on Wednesday, making it clear that he was no longer interested in the role. With the Browns still searching for their next head coach, McDaniel’s exit narrows the list of available candidates.

McDaniel’s decision comes during a busy stretch in the coaching carousel. The former Miami Dolphins head coach was scheduled to meet with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday regarding their offensive coordinator vacancy after the team fired Greg Roman. Despite stepping away from the Browns job, McDaniel is still drawing strong interest around the league and reportedly has multiple offensive coordinator offers available.

McDaniel has positioned himself as a respected offensive coach across the NFL. He previously served as offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers before becoming Miami’s head coach in 2022. While his Dolphins teams reached the playoffs in his first two seasons, they went 15–19 over the past two years. McDaniel finished his Miami tenure with a 35–33 regular-season record and an 0–2 playoff mark, but his offensive background keeps him in demand for both coordinator and head coaching roles.
