“I expect to be the starter.” That’s what Russell Wilson said heading into his first season with the New York Giants. And honestly, it looked like he’d get that chance until draft night. The Giants shook things up by taking Jaxson Dart in the first round with the 25th overall pick. Still, plenty of folks figured Wilson would hold it down while Dart learned behind him. But then came rookie minicamp, and the kid showed out.
Dart made a statement, proving he might be more ready than anyone thought. So now the big question is, will the Giants give the rookie a real chance in 2025? But….even if he is given that chance, as per a Giants legend’s son, he is not that great a quarterback.
Giants’ ex-QB Phil Simms, who played with the team for 14 years, might still root for the franchise. But his son, Chris Simms, doesn’t think they will make it through the playoffs. And one of the reasons to say this is the quarterbacks available on the roster.

“I don’t expect the Giants to be a super team here. I’m not picking the Giants to go to the playoffs.” However, he does expect Jaxon Dart to take up the role, as he mentioned, “The amount of money they’re paying Russell Wilson does not guarantee him the starting quarterback job. Those are things I look at to go, if Jaxson Dart is phenomenal through training camp and OTAs and has a really good preseason. And Russell Wilson is just eh, just OK, and doesn’t look all that sharp, I don’t think they’ll be scared to start Jaxson Dart here.” But….there’s an issue with the new QB too.
Simms, who joined the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, was asked what that thing is that is holding him up from calling Jaxson Dart a superstar. To which, the ex-NFLer said, “I like a lot about him. I don’t see a wow physical talent, right? And that’s still a big thing. The great ones of all time all had wow physical talent.” But Dart doesn’t have one, per the 44-year-old.

Explaining his stance further, Simms also gave out some examples of the QBs who had that “wow” factor in them, including Tom Brady. He said, “If you want to go through it, [John] Elway, wow. [Dan] Marino, wow. Brett Favre, wow. Aaron Rodgers, wow. Troy Aikman in his prime, wow. Right? [Patrick] Mahomes right now, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, wow. [Tom] Brady’s arm is a wow arm, right? So, that’s where you look at that, and that’s where I don’t necessarily see that from Jaxson Dart yet to this point.”
What’s your perspective on:
Can Jaxson Dart prove Chris Simms wrong and become the Giants' next big quarterback sensation?
Have an interesting take?
Sure, Dart is not the biggest or flashiest guy out there, like Brady or others. At 6-foot-2, 223 lbs, he won’t exactly turn heads with his frame. But still, that young boy has got the intangibles and instincts to play the starter. The reason is obvious: he can be very accurate inside of 25 yards, and has the ability for quick release. So, Simms is hopeful that Dart might improve later, as he mentioned, “Maybe he can change that. Maybe I’m wrong about my evaluation. We’ll see where it goes. I know he can play. I’m rooting for him. I’m a huge Giants fan, right? But, yeah, there are some things about his game that I’d like to see. Maybe a little more explosive arm talent, more lasers, and stuff like that down the football field.”
So, yeah, it remains to be seen how well he performs in the franchise to become a starter and how long it takes him to build his name in the league. Until then, Jaxon Dart is perfectly catching eyeballs as a rookie.
How was Jaxson Dart in the camp?
Jaxson Dart knew it wouldn’t be perfect, but that didn’t stop him from showing up and owning the moment. In his first practice with the Giants, he looked calm, sharp, and ready. He went 8-for-10 in 7-on-7s. But his two misses were the drops. No worries, since it’s his start. As per the reports, most of his throws were quick, short, over the middle, and everyone had some fire behind it. He even slipped one right through traffic, confident and precise. So, after the practice, you could easily feel how real it all felt for him.

Talking about the same, Dart called it surreal, wearing that jersey, taking it all in. He said, “I feel like it kind of just hit us for the first time. Being out here and wearing this jersey is an amazing privilege. … And you just want to continue to get better each and every day….I just think I’m really confident in my preparation every day. And I feel like anytime I step on the field, I don’t have doubts when I play. I think that comes from taking the time to understand the scheme, what I’m doing, and why a play is called to be executed a certain way. And that’s something that I take pride in.” But it wasn’t just about throwing the football.

The night before, Jaxson Dart gathered his rookie teammates on the bus to go over the practice script. There, he showed his leadership. He wanted everyone locked in, on the same page, moving as one. So that, when he steps on the field, there’s no doubt in him. Because for this young quarterback, it’s about doing it right and doing it together.
