Laken Tomlinson has been released by the New York Jets. The 32-year-old offensive guard has been with the franchise since the 2022 season, after signing a three-year contract worth $40 million. But, now after an arguably poor performance, the team is considering a roster surgery.

The Jets’ decision to release Tomlinson was expected, given that he had a $18.9 million impact on the 2024 salary cap. This move resulted in a saving of approximately $8.1 million for the Jets this year, but they will incur $10.7 million in dead money for 2024. Now, as the 32-year-old is released by the franchise, we have explored some options left for the athlete.

Here are the top 4 spots for Laken Tomlinson

Laken Tomlinson’s strength lies in his durability, making him a consistent presence on a Jets offensive line plagued by injuries. Last season, the team had to navigate through 13 different line combinations. Remarkably, Tomlinson didn’t miss a single snap in his two seasons with the Jets and boasts a notable streak of starting 114 consecutive games, dating back to his first season with San Francisco in 2017. Therefore, this Niners team could again be a home for Tomlinson.

Being a “depth piece” in San Francisco 49ers

According to a report by DPT Jeff Mueller, the “49ers fans wanted Laken Tomlinson extended.” However, now as he is released, Mueller pointed out that “Wonder if the 49ers will bring him back as a depth piece.” Tomlinson achieved Pro Bowl status while playing as a guard in Kyle Shanahan’s coaching system.

The 49ers had to part ways with him due to financial constraints, despite his valuable contributions. If he returns to the team, it would offer increased depth on the interior offensive line of the team, and also in the best-case scenario, he could potentially be the starter in that position.

Going back to the Miami Dolphins

The Bleacher Report NFL Scouting Department suggested a trade scenario that involves a rare situation where a player moves within the same division. The proposal aimed to bring Tomlinson back to Miami Dolphins’ offensive system similar to the one where he excelled as a Pro Bowler.

And coach Mike McDaniel has already made this guard a pro bowler once, “who used Tomlinson in his scheme for the entirety of their five seasons in the Bay Area,” creating a good rapport.

New York Giants: The Giants are in need of the offensive guard’s help. So, East Rutherford could be a good place for Tomlinson. In his recent years with the Jets, Tomlinson’s performance has been average, with Pro Football Focus grades of 55.0 and 56.8 in the last two seasons, there might be concerns about pursuing him, especially for a team like the Giants, which isn’t prioritizing immediate success.

However, given his recent performance, Tomlinson may not demand a high salary at this stage of his career. This could turn out as an advantage for the Giants, and they may reconsider the situation.

Detroit Lions remains a potential opportunity

Laken Tomlinson, selected by the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 2015 draft, has had an impressive career, including a Pro Bowl selection in 2021. The current situation of the Lions is that the team will be losing their starting guards, Jonah Jackson and Graham Glasgow, to free agency, hence, this is a crucial moment for the team.

Tomlinson stands out as a top choice to fill this gap, bringing a combination of experience, talent, and a strong connection to the Lions’ community and values.

Apart from these teams, “Bleacher Report has also listed Tomlinson as a top trade target for the Seattle Seahawks, and the Washington Commanders,” as well. Wherever the athlete goes, one thing is clear. He could solve the potential offensive line issue. We wish the athlete a happy landing!
