It’s week 10 of the 2025 season. The Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff and head coach Dan Campbell shared a laugh on the sidelines after dismantling the Washington Commanders by 44-22. With this win, they now stand at 6-3 and sit at 2nd rank in the NFC North division. The QB revealed one change that made it easier.

“Yeah, I thought he (Dan Campbell) did a great job. I really did,” Goff said in the post-game conference about the head coach taking up play-calling duties for the first time since 2021.
“It’s hard, certainly, it’s his first time doing it since that first year. It’s been a long time since he’s done it. He did a great job getting plays in on time, getting personnels in, switching up the tempos. He was great.”

It was a great game for the signal caller. In 9 games, he has now finished 6 with more than 100 passer rating. Additionally, in Week 10, Jared Goff completed 25 of 33 passes for 320 yards and 3 touchdowns. Overall, the Lions had a better offensive plan. And Dan Campbell made it easier for them with his play-calling.

RB Jahmyr Gibbs alone (15 carries for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns) had better numbers than the entire Commanders’ rushing unit (27 carries for 93 yards and 1 score). The best part about the victory was their hunger.

The Lions converted early chances into scores, while the defense stopped the rivals. At halftime, the scoreline read 25-10 in favor of the winners. They dominated all quarters as well, scoring more points. Now that the coach has started calling the plays, things are expected to go even better.

Dan Campbell assures fans of success
For the fans, watching their coach call plays was a great scene. But some are worried if things are going badly behind the scenes, as OC John Morton lost his authority. But the coach assured them.
“It was completely different circumstances. I don’t know how to compare and contrast further than that,” Campbell said.

In his first season as the head coach, Dan Campbell faced roadblocks. In 2021, the Lions had zero wins in the first 12 weeks. They lost 11, while the week 10 game ended with a draw. This year, things have been pretty smooth. But something happened earlier this week that might have contributed to this change.

The head coach has been praising his offensive line for blocking the defense. But he was not happy with the lapses in communication against the Minnesota Vikings in the Week 9 loss. Morton had disregarded those complaints, saying they needed to protect Jared Goff better. Yet, Morton remains in control of their offensive game. The Lions HC worked closely with his OC during the game.
“Let’s try something a little different,” Campbell said. “I know what I want to do, I know how I want to do it. That being said, this is a collaborative effort. I was taking input from John Morton. John is vital to me.”
Morton replaced Ben Johnson, who became the Chicago Bears’ head coach. He started his NFL coaching career with the Raiders in 1993. Over the years, he’s worked for several teams, including the Jets, 49ers, and Saints, where he served as wide receivers coach from 2015 to 2016.

He became the Jets’ offensive coordinator in 2017, but the team fired him after one season. Morton then joined the Raiders as a senior offensive assistant before spending a year with the Lions and later moving to the Broncos.
It’s an interesting scenario in Detroit now for Jared Goff & co.
