It was Saturday, April 12. Police officials were chasing a car that cruised through traffic in Houston, Texas. The car crashed and stopped. But the law enforcement people took 2 steps back when they saw the driver. He died in the car. A brief investigation revealed that he had argued with his family, discharged a firearm, and fled the scene. It was none other than LSU WR Kyren Lacy. He was only 24. The shocking news shook the NFL world. His teammates, NY Giants WR Malik Nabers and Commanders QB Jayden Daniels, posted emotional stories about their friend.

The loss of his dear friend still makes the receiver upset. During his appearance on May 1 on the 7PM In Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony show, he opened up about the loss. Nabers said, “Bro, I regret leaving. I regret leaving school because I knew that if I had been there — if we had been there — it would have changed. Like, that’s probably my biggest regret. I’m not going to say it’s definite, but it’s probably my biggest regret — just not taking him with us when we left for the draft.” That’s something that can haunt you for life.

Lacy arrived at LSU in 2022, one year after Malik Nabers. While Lacy had to sit on the bench in 2022, playing 14 games (starting 2), they played considerable games in 2023 as Lacy played 13 games (10 starters). Over those 2 seasons, they made a special bond, which got broken when the Giants drafted Nabers in the first round (6th overall) in the 2024 draft.

Kyren Lacy became wayward after that. In December last year, he reportedly hit a 78-year-old man and fled the scene without informing authorities. Nabers rued their absence, which intensified the situation and added, “Not having him with us when we got drafted… that’s probably our biggest regret now, seeing what happened. Because we all wanted to get there, and he was the only one who never got to see the end of the daylight.” It’s heartbreaking. No one prepares for moments like these.

They were really close after sharing the locker room together for almost 2 years.

What’s your perspective on:

Could Malik Nabers have changed Kyren Lacy's fate if he stayed at LSU longer?

Malik Nabers shocked by Kyren Lacy news

On the night of April 12, the football world woke to the devastating news. While talking about his first reaction, the Giants WR added, “I checked my phone, but I went to Instagram first. And I saw… it was him. And like — it’s like every thought in my head went blank. I didn’t know how to think, I didn’t know who to call, I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know what to do. And then all the memories started playing back — just me and him. And I’m like, “Nah… Nah, not him. This can’t be true.” That was not the news that you hear every day.

It was truly shocking. Even Kyren Lacy was preparing to become an NFL star. He performed well at the NFL Combine. The legal troubles were also getting sorted out as he was set for a hearing scheduled two days after he died. But everything became a dream. A bad one instead!

Moreover, Malik Nabers was devastated, as he had never experienced this type of pain before. By his own admission, “I didn’t understand death at the time, but this was like the first person I had lost close to me. And when it happened, it just… it hit. Like, life’s real—it’s real.” It’s the sad part of human life. Losing someone so close leaves a void that might take years to fill.

His mother also sang the song I Will Always Love You as his NFL friends attended the funeral, too. Bidding goodbye is painful!
