According to ESPN’s E:60 segment, his uncle, Sam Kilgore, murdered Evans’ father in 2002. Evans was a nine-year-old sleeping upstairs, unaware of the reason for the tragedy. Later, he would learn that his father, Mike Evans Jr., would often get violent with Evans’ mother, Heather Kilgore.

Knowing the abuse suffered by his sister, one night, Sam Kilgore lost his temper. He went to Mike’s home, where the young Evans and his siblings were sleeping, and things got out of hand. In a fit of rage, he shot at Mike, ultimately killing him in the street. Following the death of his father, Evans would visit Sam in prison. On learning his motivations, he eventually forgave his uncle. Despite coming to terms with the horrible reality as a kid, Evans doesn’t want any pity directed his way. He believes that he has grown stronger as a person, learning from his early life, and gives special thanks to his mother.

Today, Evans has been a part of Tampa Bay for ten seasons after being the seventh overall pick in the 2014 draft. Despite having a good relationship with his father in his childhood, he had to accept a new reality. But going forward, Evans’s attitude is only positive: “I don’t want anybody feeling sorry for me,” he said, as per the Tampa Bay Times, “They came to me, and I don’t mind talking about it. It’s a part of me, and it made me who I am today. It’s a good story, and I hope some people can get a good message from it.”

Evans credits his mother for raising him as a single mother and making him the man he is now. On the Buccaneers website, the wide receiver penned a note on Mother’s Day dedicated to his mother and wife. Thanking Kilgore for providing for her children and giving them the simple joys of childhood, Evans wrote:

“But thank you for just raising us. You had us so young. Just raising me, my sister, my brother, and doing it the way you did. You did it on one job, but you made it work. You made sure we had the best Christmases, the best birthdays,” he wrote. “We were poor. But I didn’t feel poor. As your son, now I get to be the one to take care of you after you took care of us. Thank you for everything.”
