When the Steelers drafted the WR George Pickens in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft, the HC Mike Tomlin knew he was getting a walking mixtape. The emotional yet raw receiver showed his first flash of frustration after the week 13 game against the Falcons by arguing with a junior coach on the sideline. Just last year, the HC saw him coming late to the Christmas game against the Chiefs. There was no definite moment that severed their relationship. In fact, it slowly eroded until both grew tired of each other.
This year, the Cowboys signed him from the Pittsburgh Steelers, receiving a 2027 sixth-round pick along with him. On the other hand, the Steel City got a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick in exchange. Both sides were happy. No bad feelings, just pure business decision. Even the GM Omar Khan rushed to protect his HC’s reputation, claiming the trade was best for both sides. He said, “I wouldn’t use the word disappointment. You know we had three years with George, and you know we had some exciting times, but you know, it’s just time for the fresh start. For both sides, it was the right thing.”
But everyone wanted Tomlin’s confirmation. And finally, he spoke.

On Saturday, May 10, the Steelers HC said, “I’m not going to add any color to it other than what Omar [Khan] told you guys yesterday. We thought it was best and timely for all parties involved. I’m just focused on the opportunity that is this weekend for these rookies.” That ends the debate for once and all.

Mike Tomlin respected the receiver. But his approach is unshakeable. He has handled big names like Russell Wilson and always continued with his approach to discipline. And Pickens regularly challenged that. It wasn’t a talent issue. It was about tone, control, and making sure that the WR room doesn’t pull the offense into emotional chaos every time the box score runs cold.
For now, the coach’s focus is on the 2025 draft class. He wants Aaron Rodgers to join them soon. Insiders have even claimed it’s only a matter of time before A-rod is on his way to the Steelers. In hopes of the Super Bowl winner adding depth to the roster, the 53-year-old even ignored the Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, drafting Ohio State QB Will Howard in the 6th round (185th overall). And let’s see how that’s working out.
What’s your perspective on:
Did the Steelers make the right call trading Pickens, or will they regret losing his talent?

Mike Tomlin is working on the rookie QB
The rookie quarterback has seen different offenses, playing 4 seasons for Kansas State before moving to Ohio State. In his senior year, he led them to the CFP National Championship. The team effort was there, but his own effort was of a warrior, winning the MVP for the championship game. The 6-foot-4, 236 lbs is mentally strong.
Mike Tomlin also knows this. Just after watching him in the minicamp, he said, “He’s (Will Howard) doing great, but, again, we’re at the very beginning of it. I don’t know that we’re looking at it through that lens in terms of evaluating him. It’s more about getting to know him and just laying a good foundation that way.”

Steelers Depot’s Ross McCorkle believes that the rookie showed his smartness with the 94th-percentile SAT score. The signal caller is also ready for the bis stage. The league is unforgiving for those who can’t back their talk. But he is prepared, “I believe I’m an elite processor; I can recall things like nothing.” Mike Tomlin will be relieved to hear this.
