Almost all the fans wanted the Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to draft a receiver or a running back. WR Tetairoa McMillan and RB Omarion Hampton were available. But the owner thinks differently. He is an enigma. The way he thinks and takes decisions is beyond comprehension as they drafted OG Tyler Booker. But they assured fans that the draft went according to their plans. And they are now diving deep into the free agency to make sure they have game winners for the crucial moments. It started with drafting the WR George Pickens.

However, two more names were floating in the discussions of the fans. The Browns RB Nick Chubb and Vikings CB Stephon Gilmore were the fan favorite, as America’s Team wants to end the 3-decade drought of a Super Bowl. But NFL Network reporter Jane Slater crushed those hopes with her recent reveal.

She talked to the people close to Jerry Jones, who told her that “they (RB and CB) were never in play” for the franchise. Both of them are free agents. Two things ran against Chubb. Injuries are first as he missed 15 games in 2023 season and 9 games last year. Additionally, Jerry Jones drafted two RBs in the 2025 draft. Texas RB Jaydon Blue in the 5th round (149th overall) and Clemson RB Phil Mafah in the 7th round (239th overall).

The defensive department is also in a similar scenario. While Jerry Jones is trying to navigate the Micah Parsons deal, he would not like to make it tougher with defensive signings. Moreover, they already drafted a rookie CB from East Carolina, Shavon Revel, in the 3rd round (76th overall). The Cowboys might have ignored Gilmore over his age of 34 years. They want players with longer years for a long run.

If there was one position group that didn’t get any addition in the 2025 draft was the receivers. The teams needed more offensive players.

Jerry Jones adds key player for Dak Prescott

In 15 games last year, the WR CeeDee Lamb recorded 101 receptions in 1,194 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. But QB Dak Prescott needed another receiver in the offensive system, someone who could give breathing space to their WR1. And Jerry Jones finally gave in.

On May 7, the Cowboys added WR George Pickens from the Steelers. They also received a 2027 6th-round pick by giving up the 3rd-round pick in 2026 and 5th-round pick in 2027. Fans who were trolling Jones a fortnight ago, are now cheering the franchise. He played 48 games (40 starters) in 3 seasons and had 174 receptions in 2,841 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

While the quarterback did not reveal his feelings about the WR, the WR1 was happy. Lamb posted an emoji on X, shaking hands, which the Cowboys posted on their Instagram, revealing the happy feelings for Pickens. With a reputation to hold, the receiver will have to achieve bigger things with the Cowboys.
