When the NFL Draft clock starts ticking, the Philadelphia Eagles don’t exactly have a “play it safe” reputation. And this spring? It’s no different. With Dallas Goedert’s future in question and analysts tossing out bold predictions, Eagles fans are bracing for a franchise-defining move. The possible selection of a tight end who has shattered school records and could soon headline Philly’s offense.
So, why all the hype? The Eagles have always leaned on elite tight ends, but with Goedert’s contract and injuries piling up, it feels like change is in the air. Goedert has been a staple in the Eagles’ offense since taking over for Zach Ertz, but the situation’s getting murky. He’s 30, entering the last year of his $57 million contract, and coming off another injury-riddled season. Add in a hefty $11.7 million cap hit and some younger stars needing extensions, and suddenly, things don’t feel so locked in anymore. Especially when there’s young blood just waiting for a chance.
The draft chatter picked up serious steam when ESPN’s Todd McShay told journalist Mina Kimes on her podcast, “I do think with the Eagles, keep an eye on the Dallas Goedert situation – I think Mason Taylor would be interesting there.” And just like that, fans started connecting the dots. And honestly? It makes sense. Taylor crushed it at LSU. With 129 catches, 1,308 yards, and six touchdowns, he has become the school’s most productive tight end ever. At 6’5″ and 255 pounds, he has the athleticism that makes scouts drool. He has prime NFL DNA too (his dad is Hall of Famer Jason Taylor). He’s a legit dual-threat who can block like a beast and move like a wideout.

But why are the Eagles even considering this? GM Howie Roseman explained how the team approaches the draft. “The way we look at the draft is it’s a separate entity… We can’t make up any positions… We’ve got to make good decisions.” Translation? If the right guy’s there, they’ll take him, regardless of who’s already on the roster. The Eagles have added depth with Harrison Bryant and Kylen Granson in free agency, but they’re not exactly elite. And with limited high draft picks this year, Roseman might even trade back to scoop up Taylor and some extra value. So, how would Taylor check all the boxes for the Eagles?
Is Mason Taylor the missing piece?
Head coach Nick Sirianni loves versatility at the tight end spot. He doesn’t need a one-size-fits-all guy—he wants pieces that can shift, confuse defenses, and blow up the playbook. Here’s how he put it: “You’re always looking for… not just one guy that fits all. Sometimes you get a tight end that can do receiver stuff, or running back stuff… Our job is to take the talented players we have and find ways to make it work.” And Taylor checks all those boxes. He can block, catch, run routes, and create mismatches all day. Sirianni will have a field day using him in different formations.

The Eagles have a history of making tough roster decisions. They moved on from Brent Celek, then Zach Ertz, and now Goedert may be next. Reports suggest that even without an obvious replacement yet, the team is open to moving Goedert. NFL insider Josina Anderson has said the Eagles “are holding out hope for at least a fourth-round pick for TE Dallas Goedert in a potential trade.” in a trade. And Mason Taylor wouldn’t just be a replacement. He could be an upgrade in key areas—he’s younger, healthier, a better blocker, and more explosive after the catch. He’s got a 28-game catch streak and a knack for making big plays. Jalen Hurts would love to have a weapon like that.
So with the fresh blood coming up, is it really time to say goodbye to Goedert? At the league meetings, Nick Sirianni kept it honest when asked about Goedert’s future: “You want to have back as many guys as you possibly can, but that’s not the reality of the NFL.”. He made it clear that while everyone wants to keep the band together, sometimes you have to make hard choices to keep the team moving forward. Sirianni’s classic, “can’t be great without the greatness of others,” comes to mind, doesn’t it?

With cap constraints and a need to build for the future, tough calls have to be made. And this one? It could shape the offense for years. So what’s the play here? The Eagles are at a turning point. Stick with a proven vet who’s starting to show wear and tear? Or go all-in on a new weapon who could thrive with Jalen Hurts and become the next big thing in Philly? Mason Taylor brings upside, versatility, and the spark that the Eagles love. And if history’s any indication, this front office isn’t afraid to shake things up.
So, what do you think, Philly fans—ride it out with Goedert, or start fresh with Taylor? Big decisions are coming, and the next chapter in the Eagles’ tight end legacy might just be starting. Don’t blink.
