As the NFL Draft inches closer, everyone has their eyes set on Caleb Williams. The USC quarterback is being projected as the No.1 pick by the Chicago Bears. And now, with the trade of Justin Fields by the franchise, the odds of the two uniting seem as high as ever.

Williams has been getting all sorts of advice from people in the NFL sphere, be it RGIII’s advice to second-guess Chicago as his first landing spot or analyst Leaf’s counsel of not beginning his career as a starter. While the opinions are aplenty, NFL analyst and Williams’ former coach share what makes the young quarterback worth all the hype.

Lincoln Riley of USC pointed out Williams’ Heisman trophy win as ample proof of his success at the college level of football. The coach further said that Williams is “used to being under a microscope” and is used to being under constant public analysis for his play or statements.

Talking about Williams’ 14 interceptions in the past three years, Riley said that it shows that the soon-to-rookie “values the ball.” Contrary to the popular opinion of Williams being a “reckless player” or “gunslinger,” the coach revealed that the QB has always been “conservative” with the ball. Furthermore, he feels that Williams is very “patient” with the ball, which is not as common among young players.

NFL journalist James Palmer discussed Williams’s “protecting the football” skills with analyst Steve Wyche on his show. The analyst pointed out Williams’ fumbles as an area that needs work and explained why Chicago might be a good spot for him to hone his skill set.

Why is Chicago better for Williams?

Williams’ USC coach, Palmer, and analyst Wyche all praised the QB’s impressive touchdowns to interceptions ratio. The projected No. 1 pick had 93 touchdowns, 1099 pass attempts, and 14 interceptions in his college career. This ability especially stands out, considering that the Bears struggled with interceptions, having 15, 15, and 20 in their last three years in the league, as pointed out by Palmer.

Furthermore, Palmer pointed out that Williams will join a talented “receiver group” consisting of players like DJ Moore and Cole Kmet, who all have “high football IQs.” Wyche agreed that the firm receiving base will help Williams improve on his fumbles, as that is one area the QB struggles in. The analyst feels that the welcoming deck for Williams is much better than what Justin Fields came into as a first-round pick.
