The San Francisco 49ers kick off their first OTA on Tuesday, May 27. Everyone’s watching, because it’s not just about practice. It’s about Brock Purdy‘s future. The guy could become the highest-paid quarterback in 49ers history, with reports saying he’s eyeing over $50 million a year. And honestly, the team seems ready to give it to him. But the question is, when? He has just two weeks left for OTAs, which are scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, May 27. So, it’s high time the team pays him soon, and if reports are true, the QB will be extended soon. Now, while everyone’s still waiting on that big deal to drop, something unexpected just came out of Kyle Shanahan‘s camp – a move that just might shift the entire outlook for Purdy’s spot.

Last season, Brandon Aiyuk only suited up for seven games, putting up 374 yards and no touchdowns. Coming off a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus, fans were hoping he’d bounce back strong. But before he even hits the field, trade rumors are heating up. According to some reports, Kyle Shanahan might move Aiyuk this offseason and unload that hefty $30 million salary. If that goes down, Brock Purdy could be left without his key weapons, especially with Deebo Samuel already gone from Santa Clara. So now the big question is… what’s next for the 49ers’ QB?

According to NFL Rumors on X, “#49ers Jauan Jennings will have a chance to be WR1 for the #Niners this season.” That’s a huge script flip for Purdy, isn’t it? Ahead of the 2024 season, Jennings was considered the No. 3 receiver in the franchise. But for the QB? He probably came in 5th, when including running back Christian McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle. So, obviously, if that happens, it might pose some difficulty for the 25-year-old to build a strong connection like that with Aiyuk or Samuel.

But if you ask Jennings about his potential WR1 role, the 27-year-old is thinking all positive. When 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak asked the player to resume at No.1, Jennings, via the OC, said, “He says ‘I’m No. 1. And that’s his mindset and that’s why we love Jauan.” Well, this connection can really do well if given the opportunity.

Last year, it was Jennings who helped Brock Purdy in the absence of his key weapons. By the first week of December, the WR led the team in targets (70), catches (50), and receiving yards (684). That’s the reason he gained respect from the quarterback, too, who later admitted, “I think he does a good job with using his frame and creating separation with just how big he is. And he’s a guy that I feel like has actually got some underrated speed. And it may not look like that, but he really does. He gets up on guys quickly and gets out of cuts pretty well. And his radius for the ball and stuff is really good. So, definitely trusting him.”

So, it’s now pretty clear that despite the script change, Purdy and Jennings would be able to pull this one together. All they want is a chance, but what if a new member joins the show?

What’s your perspective on:

Will Brock Purdy thrive without Aiyuk and Samuel, or is his success tied to their presence?

Is Kyle Shanahan going to bring another receiver for Brock Purdy?

Gabe Davis just landed in San Francisco for a visit with the 49ers. The 26-year-old wideout was cut by the Jaguars last week after a meniscus tear, and they labeled it a failed physical. But despite that setback, reports suggest that he’ll be ready by Week 1. So, what if he joins Brock Purdy on the O-line?

Davis, who started his NFL journey with the Bills back in 2020, had four decent seasons there before heading to Jacksonville. Things didn’t click much with the Jags, though it turned out to be his least productive year yet. He finished the 2024 season catching 20-of-42 passes (47.6%) for 239 yards with two TDs.

So, now, if he’s healthy and fits into Kyle Shanahan’s system, the Niners might just give him a fresh chance to revive his career with Brock Purdy. But that’s possible only when the QB is extended. Because if Purdy decides to hold out from the OTAs, that could be a problem for the team.
