The San Francisco 49ers took a new path this offseason. They went young, leaned into the draft, and made a bold move, trading Deebo Samuel to the Commanders for just a fifth-rounder. With one year left on his deal, Kyle Shanahan let him walk. Now, for the squad, it’s Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall, and Jauan Jennings leading the receiver room. But there’s a catch.
Brandon Aiyuk’s still healing from a brutal ACL and MCL tear he suffered last October. That alone stirs up real concern about who’s gonna step up. They brought in veteran DeMarcus Robinson as a backup plan, but he’s facing a possible suspension for a DUI. Ricky Pearsall’s still finding his rhythm, and Jauan Jennings? He’s playing for a new deal. So the big question now – do Kyle Shanahan’s Niners roll with what they’ve got or make another move before Week 1? Perhaps, yes! But, there could be a problem.
As per the latest reports, Shanahan and the 49ers are looking to bring free agent Gabe Davis into the team. But the issue is, according to the NFL Rumors on X, both “the #Giants and #49ers have shown interest in former #Jaguars WR Gabe Davis.”

Yes! These two teams are eyeing Davis, which has created another headache for Kyle Shanahan as he was trying to bring the wide receiver for his quarterback, Brock Purdy. Reports say both teams are still in contact after Davis stopped by New York. So yeah, anything could happen.
Besides Davis, according to the reports, Kyle Shanahan might also look to add veterans like Keenan Allen or Amari Cooper to help Purdy. We all know that just recently, the Niners locked in the QB with his new deal, but to give him more help, they’ve been poking around the free agent market.
That’s why Gabe Davis stopped by San Francisco this month after the Jaguars cut him just a year into a big multi-year deal. But here’s the real question: can Kyle Shanahan and the Niners grab him off the market before the Giants do? Then again… What if there’s no real need to chase Davis, or any other receiver, for that locker room at all?

Did the 49ers make a mistake trading Deebo Samuel for a fifth-rounder? What's your take?
Have an interesting take?
No urgent need for WR for Kyle Shanahan?
If we talk about Gabe Davis, in 10 games, he only hauled in 20 passes. Now, here’s the thing. Davis can block, which fits well in the 49ers’ run-heavy offense. But he’s mainly a deep threat, and that doesn’t quite match up with Brock Purdy’s game. Brock thrives in the middle of the field, not launching bombs downfield. And let’s be real, Davis isn’t exactly crisp on his routes either. So truthfully, Kyle Shanahan’s squad might not be hurting for him.

In fact, they just picked up veteran DeMarcus Robinson. They drafted Jordan Watkins this year, and Jacob Cowing the year before. Plus, Brandon Aiyuk’s expected to return from his knee injury. They’re already deep. That said, if Kyle Shanahan could land Davis on a cheap deal, just for his blocking? It wouldn’t be the worst move. But it might be counted as unnecessary.

And we also know that Kyle Shanahan doesn’t need stars to make magic at wide receiver. He’s proven that. So even if the receiver room isn’t stacked, it’s not the end of the world. That’s the one spot this team can afford to be a little thin. Now, yeah, Keenan Allen or Amari Cooper could totally fit, Cooper especially. But let’s not kid ourselves. They’re free agents for a reason.

If the Niners were all-in on either of them, they’d already be in the building. So, all in all, it seems, the 49ers might not be signing any new free agent WR this time. The team is happy with the ones available.
