The San Francisco 49ers are in a great position with their offensive players being in the MVP talks. All eyes are on Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey. In the latest episode of SPEAK, Joy Taylor, LeSean McCoy, James Jones, and former Cincinnati Bengals WR debated on who truly deserves the MVP tag.

T. J. Houshmandzadeh, who also played for the Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks, chose Brock Purdy. The former Wide Receiver backed his arguments with solid facts as others looked inclined towards Christian McCaffrey. Not only this, he also shared why McCaffrey is in talks for MVP.

The 49ers are leading the NFC Conference with a record of eleven victories and three defeats. One reason behind their sheer dominance in the current season is the promise their offense is portraying. SPEAK’s YouTube channel uploaded a video featuring a discussion about who’s more valuable for the 49ers, Purdy or McCaffrey. Sharing his thoughts, T. J. Houshmandzadeh named Purdy as the most valuable 49er. The Bengals’ WR was rather shocked that this was even a point of discussion.

Houshmandzadeh said, “I can’t even believe this is a question, it’s Brock Purdy, like no doubt.” He further added, “If Brock Purdy isn’t in the game that offense doesn’t work the way that it should work in the way they need it to work. Christian McCaffrey is a great player but this is probably his last chance to win an MVP to be in the conversation.” For Houshmandzadeh, Brock Purdy is going to be in the conversation for years to come.

In the 2023 NFL season, both McCaffrey and Purdy successfully tackled through the defenses and took their team to this promising position in the season. But again, McCaffrey undoubtedly played at an MVP level on Sunday – a season-high 187 scrimmage yards (115 rush, 72 receiving) and three touchdowns says it all. The team secured a 45-29 victory over the 3-11 Arizona Cardinals.

Even though Brock Purdy has taken the lead in this tight race, the 23-year-old quarterback still feels it’s McCaffrey who deserves the award.

Purdy promotes McCaffrey for the MVP

McCaffrey scored 1292 yards and 13 touchdowns until now in the ongoing season. Forming an on-field formidable duo with Purdy, he has managed to generate promising numbers for himself In his career, Purdy scored 5,169 yards and 42 touchdowns with McCaffrey in 22 games. And these stats are just set to evolve in the coming time.

Realistically, McCaffrey is in the MVP talks not just for the reasons quoted by T. J. Houshmandzadeh. Brock Purdy, who was called “a game manager” by former league MVP Cam Newton last week, voiced his support for McCaffrey in the post-game conference. He said, “I think Christian should be MVP. I really do believe that. He does everything for us … and so in my eyes that’s an MVP.

While Purdy may be valuable, McCaffrey is indeed on pace for 2,200 scrimmage yards and 25 TDs. Interestingly, a section of NFL fans think that the 49ers were winning with or without Brock Purdy. It shouldn’t be hard to convince oneself that Christian McCaffrey deserves to be the MVP when it comes to being a difference-maker.
