Tommy DeVito’s start to the season was just a flash in the pan. The Giants quarterback took the football arena by storm in his Week 10 game when both Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor were injured. However, looking at the recent revelations, it seems that DeVito’s time as a starter is coming to a temporary end.

The New York Giants played against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Week 16 game on December 25. The former was defeated with a score of 33-25, as the Eagles managed to capitalize on their skills in the first two-quarters of the game. However, as the Eagles celebrate their eleventh win this season, the matchup took a surprising turn during the first half of the game with Tommy DeVito at its center.

During the Week 16 game, the Giants were 17 points behind and deep in the hole. Furthermore, then-starting QB, Tommy DeVito, struggled in the first half, only completing nine out of 16 passes for 55 yards, and the team’s passing game was also not doing well. The only thing that was going well was Saquon Barkley’s rushing attacks, completing 57 yards by that time, including a 12-yard rush.

Therefore, observing the struggle of the team, Giants’ coach Brian Daboll, couldn’t help but decide to replace the starting quarterback, DeVito, with the backup QB Tyrod Taylor, for the second half. When Taylor came in, after benching rookie QB Tommy DeVito, he led the team to score a touchdown, making the score 20-10, taking advantage of the Eagles’ second half kickoff fumble.

The same was posted by Dov Kleiman on his X account. Taking to the platform he wrote, 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: #Giants rookie QB Tommy Devito has been benched for Tyrod Taylor.” However, the replacement was a surprise for many. Not because of the team’s position in the game but because of the Week 14 game scenario.

Earlier, despite being good-to-go in this game after healing from a rib injury, the veteran Tyrod Taylor was benched as the squad decided to stick with Tommy DeVito in Week 14. The decision did not please the 34-year-old who wanted to be able to play.

While the QB has been given a green card to display his skills in today’s game, it is salient to note that what transpired before the Week 14 game for the veteran wasn’t something new. There have been instances when the 2010 ACC Player of the Year has been benched for a younger QB in the league.

Tyrod Taylor has experienced being replaced by younger QBs in his football career before. It happened in 2018 when he played for Cleveland and got permanently replaced by Baker Mayfield due to injury. Again in 2020 with the Chargers, where Justin Herbert took over the role of the starting QB as Taylor suffered yet another injury.

This time again with the Giants, the decision to replace him with Tommy DeVito didn’t sit well with Taylor. He expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s tough, obviously as a competitor, not being able to go out there once healthy, it hurts. But at the same time, it’s the nature of the business. … It’s tough. It’s disappointing, but it’s also out of my control.

But now after DeVito’s struggle against the Eagles, Giants have surely given Taylor a gift on Christmas Day.
