Before Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs had a long history of struggles. They had not won a Super Bowl in 50 years, despite winning nine division titles and making 17 playoff appearances. Their head coach, Andy Reid, was known as a great coach who couldn’t win the big game. He had spent 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles without winning a Super Bowl.

When he joined the Chiefs in 2013, it seemed like the team might continue to struggle. Mahomes’ success on the field has had a big impact on Kansas City. The city’s image has changed from a quiet, forgotten place to a lively, proud city. In a recent podcast, writer Rustin Dodd explained that Mahomes has changed how people see Kansas City, similar to Chicago after Michael Jordan’s arrival.

Rustin said, “When I was growing up Kansas City was it was a place where people would maybe go work during the day but after five o’clock it it really ceased to be a city. I mean it was not even really kind particularly like you know the downtown kind of uh area was. It was just not a a place it was I mean people refer to it as a ghost town.”

Dodd also talked about the intense local pride that has developed in Kansas City. People feel a strong connection between their city and their team. The success of the Chiefs has given the city a new sense of identity and confidence. People no longer see Kansas City as a “ghost town” but as a vibrant and important place. Someone asked Rustin if Mahomes caused the resurgence of Kansas City. He replied, “When Patrick Mahomes arrives in 2017, the city’s sort of already on this upward trajectory… but then Mahomes has kind of changed everything.”

The host drew a comparison to Michael Jordan.People often associated Chicago with negative things like Al Capone before Jordan. But after Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships, the city became known for its basketball greatness. Just like things changed with the arrival of Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes joined the team in 2017 and made an immediate impact.

How Patrick Mahomes is transforming the Chiefs into a dynasty?

Even with talented players like Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones, the Chiefs couldn’t get past the Divisional Round of the playoffs. But everything changed when Mahomes took over.

In his first season as the starting quarterback, he led the team to the AFC Championship. Although they lost to the New England Patriots, it was clear that Mahomes had brought fresh energy and hope to the team and the city. In 2019, just two years after Mahomes became the starting quarterback, the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, breaking their 50-year drought.
