Rodger’s take on psychedelic drugs has been controversial from the start. Some people support him, but he also has his fair share of critics. The 39-year-old New York Jets player is currently rehabbing in California for his torn Achilles. But he has made stunning progress by walking without crutches and throwing passes just a month and a half after his injury. At this pace, some people believe he will break Minnestoa Vikings’ Cam Akers’ record of being back on the field after an Achilles tear in just five months.

Does ayahuasca have a role to play in his fast recovery? It had been brought up several times during his interviews on The Pat McAfee Show, but the 4x NFL MVP still hasn’t given us a clear answer. Now it seems other players are also getting the ayahuasca fever. And the latest one is Buffalo Bills’ Safety.

Bills’ safety, Jordan Poyer, recently revealed that he started taking the plant medicine after Aaron Rodgers took the plunge. Speaking on RG3 and The Ones, he said, “Aaron Rodgers opened me up to plant medicine with ayahuasca. I was very curious when he announced it and when he started talking about it on The Pat McAfee Show, and so I started researching it.”

He said that he had first tried the plant medicine, which is banned in the US, during a family trip to Costa Rica. Before being allowed to partake of the medicine, he had to perform different ceremonies. After the retreat, he claimed he felt revitalized and came out a “new man”. Last season was tough for Poyer as he battled multiple injuries, but he said ayahuasca helped him break out of the mental fog caused by the injuries.

Poyer further issued a disclaimer that ayahuasca may not be for everyone, but he sure is planning another trip to Costa Rice with more family members and teammates. And it seems that the medicine may have served him well, as he has recorded 41 tackles this season. And A-Rod himself seems to have benefitted greatly from the consumption of this drug.

Speaking at the Psychedelic Science 2023 convention in Denver, the New York Jets player shocked the sports world when he “came out” as an ayahuasca user. He had been using it for some years, but was apprehensive about revealing it to the public because he was scared of how they might react. Winning two back-to-back MVP titles finally gave him the confidence to tell the world about the potential of the plant medicine.

According to the Guardian, Rodgers said ayahuasca helped him with his MVP titles, after experiencing a low year in 2019. “You know, it’s going to be hard to cancel me, because, you know, the previous year, 26 touchdowns, four interceptions. We had a good season. Ayahuasca, 48 touchdowns, five interceptions, MVP. What are you going to say?” One of the ways in which the drug has helped him is by helping him bond with his teammates. The star QB said that doing an ayahuasca ceremony — held in a maloca — with teammates had strengthened their bonds with one another.
