When a passionate fan wrote to the Green Bay Packers’ CEO and jokingly applied for the Defensive Coordinator position, he only expected a rejection letter. So when a handwritten letter by Mark Murphy was sent to his house, he was more than ecstatic.

Murphy won over the hearts of Packers fans when he went the extra mile to make Port feel special, giving him the surprise of a lifetime. Bill Port, from the Milwaukee area, had some interesting skills under his belt for the then-vacant DC position.

Armed with his fantasy football titles, Port sent a cover letter and resume to Mark Murphy in the last offseason. He cited his ample experience playing football in high school. He further made his workdays clear, asking for weekends to be off.

Prior to this, Port had also tried his hand at convincing Green Bay to allow him to take over as the head coach in 2019 after the firing of Matt McCarthy. The second time proved to be the charm for Port when, although rejected, he got a wholesome keepsake from Mark Murphy. Unfortunately for Port, Green Bay had already instated Boston College’s Jeff Hafley as their new DC. However, Port might get another chance to apply at Packers soon.

In his monthly column on Packers.com, Murphy responded to a fan who was unhappy with his tenure in the most cheeky way possible. In his 12th email to the CEO, the fan wrote, “I am emailing today to express my disappointment and dissatisfaction with the franchise and its direction during your tenure as CEO,” Justin M. from Tucson writes. “I believe it is long overdue for you to retire and give control of the organization to someone else who is more properly prepared to take the team into the future. Your leadership has been inept. You do not deserve to lead such a storied franchise. Please disappear into retirement ether. Nobody likes you. You have never been a good executive. I wish you the worst in your twilight years.”

CEO Mark Murphy had a fitting reply for the disgruntled fan. “Thanks for sharing your opinion, Justin. I also appreciate the 11 other emails you’ve recently sent with similar suggestions. I get your point. You will be pleased to know that I am required to retire in July 2025 under our by-laws.”
