Are Matt LaFleur’s Packers serious contenders for a Super Bowl run this year? Maybe. They made it to the Wild Card round last season before falling to the eventual champs, the Philadelphia Eagles. That’s no small feat, and it gives fans reason to believe this team’s just a few tweaks away from becoming a real threat. But before anyone starts printing NFC Championship t-shirts, Green Bay’s front office still has some holes to patch. One of the big questions this offseason? The secondary, specifically, the CB.

For weeks now, there’s been buzz around whether the Packers would move on from 2x Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander. Injuries kept him sidelined for most of 2023, and multiple reports hinted his time in Green Bay might be over. But hang on. According to ESPN’s Peter Schrager, the team is flipping the script on that narrative. “It appears more likely that Alexander will remain with the Packers,” reported Peter Schrager. “Alexander has had great talks with HC Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst. He also has a great relationship with DC Jeff Hafley.”

ESPN’s Peter Schrager joined Pat McAfee on his show and revealed that he spoke directly with Matt LaFleur, who told him, “they’re in a good place with Jaire Alexander.” During last season, Alexander first had to miss a few games in the early weeks after injuring his quadriceps. When he returned in Week 8, the CB had to exit after suffering a knee injury in the final minutes of the game. Eventually, HC LaFleur announced that because of swelling in his knee, Alexander would miss the remainder of the season. The 28-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery after that, ending his season.

These injuries gave rise to rumors that the Packers were likely to part ways with their CB. But Schrager shot those down, saying, “From what I gathered, this thing is in a lot better place than what was being presented in the media, and that there is a place for Jaire Alexander in Green Bay.”

So, while the Packers seem to have locked things down on the defensive end with Alexander, they’re also making quiet moves on offense.

Can Jaire Alexander's return make the Packers' defense a force to be reckoned with this season?

Matt LaFleur gets backup for Jordan Love

Last week, the Packers held their rookie minicamp, where they looked at some of the possible prospects to complete their 90-man roster. Luckily, Matt LaFleur seems to have found someone to add to the QB room. The Packers were impressed with Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma, so much so that the team is reportedly offering him a contract. Elgersma was also invited to the Bills’ rookie minicamp, but according to reports, he won’t be attending now.

According to an @NFL source, the @packers are expected to offer a contract to former @Laurier QB Taylor Elgersma. Elgersma attended mini-camp with the Packers last weekend and had been planning to attend @BuffaloBills mini-camp May 9-10th. #NFL,” reported Dave Naylor of TSN on Thursday.

Elgersma is an alum of Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario. The 23-year-old went undrafted this year, but teams showed interest in seeing more of him on the gridiron. During his 2024 season with the Golden Hawks football team, the QB had a breakout senior year, racking up 4,011 yards and 34 TDs. So, while the Packers have Jordan Love up front, there is no harm in having a backup. Elgersma will likely serve as backup to Love. For now, the Packers have not confirmed the deal and contract details. But as the reports are out, contract details might be here soon too.
