This season, the Carolina Panthers’ cornerback room had been a rare bright spot on an otherwise shaky roster. Jaycee Horn, a two-time Pro Bowler, and Mike Jackson had settled in as the Panthers’ starting outside tandem. But Sunday’s 21-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns changed that in a hurry, as both starters went down with injuries in the same game. Now, just days later, the fallout has forced the Panthers into a flurry of roster moves to cover two losses at once.

“Brutal #Panthers news: They’re sending both starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) to IR,” The Observer’s Alex Zietlow wrote on X. “To fill their 53-man roster spots, Carolina is calling up WR David Moore and RB Tre Tyus from the practice squad. Carolina also signed CB Robert Rochell to the PS.”
Jackson was the first to go down, exiting in the first quarter with a groin injury that kept him out the rest of the way. Rookie fourth-round pick Will Lee III stepped in and ended up playing a career-high 64 defensive snaps in relief.
Horn’s quad injury came much later and carried far more weight. He left in the fourth quarter, right after the Browns’ Harold Fannin Jr. hauled in the game-winning touchdown, a sequence that cost the Panthers both the game and, as it turned out, their best cornerback.
That combination of bad luck and bad timing left the Panthers needing answers fast, and on Wednesday the team provided them. Carolina placed both Horn and Jackson on injured reserve (IR). The corresponding roster moves showed the scale of the problem, with the team needing multiple transactions just to get back to 53.
However, three moves are in place, but only one is aimed at solving the actual problem at hand.
The severity of the situation was seen in head coach Dave Canales’ statement. When asked about replacing his top cornerback Jaycee Horn, he was direct about what the team was and wasn’t asking of the rest of the secondary.
“There’s no replacing Jaycee Horn,” Canales said. “He has had such an amazing offseason training camp, in-season, just the energy, the preparation, all the different things. [He] has been amazing, has been really beautiful, so there’s no replacing that. We’re not asking our guys to replace Jaycee. We’re just asking them to do their job.”
With Horn and Jackson both on IR, the cornerback room looks thin.
In the 2026 season, both cornerbacks have shared similar stats. Both of them started three games and recorded six tackles. And Horn successfully defended two passes.
So far, the Panthers’ cornerback depth includes Lee, Akayleb Evans, and Chau Smith-Wade. Notably, the team chose not to promote cornerback Corey Thornton, who won the nickel job for a stretch last season before his own injury, leaving him available only as a potential game-day elevation.
The corner room isn’t the only one banged up, either. Carolina is also monitoring quarterback Bryce Young (lower body), receivers Jalen Coker (quad) and Xavier Legette (knee), safety Nick Scott (rib) and linebacker Devin Lloyd (calf), a reminder that the Panthers’ injury report runs far deeper than just the secondary right now.
With the new players in place, the Panthers will welcome the Detroit Lions in Week 4 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
