Travis Kelce might currently be the cornerstone of the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty. However, there was a time when the Dallas Cowboys dropped him due to his alleged mistake, which he recently revealed.

During the 2013 NFL Draft, the Chiefs tight end patiently waited until 62 other players were chosen before his name was called. Looking at his achievements with the Chiefs, it’s clear that the teams that passed on drafting him might now regret their decision. Among those teams, one is the Dallas Cowboys. A video of Kelce explaining the incident has been resurfacing online, and Pat McAfee and the team discussed it for their episode on Wednesday.

In a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, the former NFL punter and his co-hosts discussed Travis Kelce’s “red flag” moment when he was 19. Kelce, in his New Heights podcast with his brother, revealed that he was undrafted by many teams, like the Cowboys, as he failed the mar*ju*na test. In this episode, McAfee said, “I assume that would have been a big red flag for Travis Kelce coming out into the NFL. This guy failed a mar*ju*na test now, it’s like schools are even testing for mar*ju*na anymore.

The 36-year-old added, “Do we even hear that schools are testing for mar*ju*na anymore? The NBA no longer tests for mar*ju*na, the NFL has always used mar*ju*na as a leverage piece in negotiation with the players.” He further praised Kelce for accepting his fault as a youngster and appreciated Andy Reid for choosing him for the team.

McAfee mentioned, “Thank God! Andy Reid, when he drafted Travis Kelce didn’t care and thank God that Andy Reid brought Patrick Mahomes in there, because watching those two play football together” is delightful to the eyes.

What happened at Travis Kelce’s NFL Combine?

In a recent episode of New Heights with his newly retired brother Jason Kelce, Travis Kelce revealed what and how it went wrong in his NFL Combine period. The 34-year-old said, “At the combine, I had some bad interviews. The Cowboys, they were kind of pressing me about having this red flag of missing a year.” Kelce faced a setback in his college football career at the University of Cincinnati when he was suspended for the entire 2010 season with the Bearcats. The suspension resulted from a positive mar*ju*na test, violating the team’s rule. However, Kelce made a comeback in 2011 and had an outstanding performance in the 2012 season (totaling 45 passes for 722 yards and eight TDs), gaining attention from NFL scouts.

Despite his impressive turnaround, the Cowboys seemed doubtful about Kelce, and this skepticism was something that the athlete didn’t appreciate. Kelce mentioned, “It ended really fast. I basically just said, ‘If you guys think I’m gonna be that kind of guy, or you’re questioning if I’m still that person after everything that I’ve battled through to get to where I am now from missing a season, then you guys (should) probably go somewhere else and pick somebody else.’ And that’s exactly what they did.” Ultimately, Dallas decided to draft TE Gavin Escobar with the 47th overall pick. Escobar played with the team for four seasons, catching 30 passes, before concluding his career with the Ravens in 2017.

Travis Kelce, on the other hand, was picked up by the Chiefs and made his mark in the league after winning 3 Super Bowls.
