Patrick Mahomes’ Former Teammate Agrees With ESPN Analyst, Outlines Chiefs WR Ambitions Amidst Darnell Mooney Rumors

It’s miraculous to think that the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl just with the help of a tight defense and a shabby wide receiver department. Throughout the year, the team struggled with Kadarius Toney and Marquez Valdes-Scantling not performing well. They’ve already let MVS go, and rumors are he might even join the Jets with former teammate Aaron Rodgers. To fill the spot, the Chiefs might be eyeing Bears’ star Darnell Mooney.
Gehrig Dieter, the former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver posted his take on WR drafts on X. He gave out a couple of names that he thought would be the best pick for the Chiefs in the immediate future. According to some sources, the Chiefs are getting closer to signing Mooney with each passing day.
Dieter on his X post pointed out that the Kansas City Chiefs should look into prospects like Calvin Ridley, Curtis Samuel, and Darnell Mooney. Dieter thinks that the Chiefs should sign one of these WRs right now and reserve another one to draft them later. Hiring a new WR is becoming a priority task with each passing day as people wonder how long Patrick Mahomes can go on without a wideout to support him.

An article from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN pointed out that Mooney had his best season with Matt Nagy, who is the Chiefs’ OC right now. He used to be the Bears’ HC from 2018-2021. Hence, if the Chiefs sign Mooney to the roster, they might have to spend less time getting him up to the task.
Mooney’s 4-year $2.9 million rookie contract has finally reached its end, and he is hitting the free agency soon. However, there haven’t been a lot of demands in the WR area recently and a lot of free agents are waiting for things to change. Finding new receivers to add to the roster is fine, but MVS leaving the team has garnered a lot of mixed reactions from the NFL crowd.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling might join his former teammate
A week ago, the Chiefs decided to let go of MVS and saved about $12 million in cap space. Now, the WR is a free agent with no home. Amid all of this, a lot of people are hoping that MVS might soon be united with his former teammate Aaron Rodgers if he signs with the New York Jets. The time Rodgers and MVS had at the Packers was some of their best moments.

At this point, there are even speculations that he might even go to the Bears or even the Tennessee Titans with their lookout for an experienced WR. But that remains to be seen right now. Coming back to the Kansas City Chiefs, they might not have a lot of time on their hands to sign a new deal because the league year is beginning from March 13.
