It’s that time of the season again, and only a few hours remain for the historic Super Bowl LVIII clash between Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. The stage is set inside the coveted Allegiant Stadium as the Chiefs look to achieve the rare feat of becoming the ninth NFL team to win back-to-back championships. 49ers on the other half of the pitch will look to reverse the 2020 defeat and win their first championship in 30 years. But they have to defeat the NFL’s greatest duo Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs quarterback and tight end have been simply sensational this season. They recently broke Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski’s record, and further have the chance to stamp themselves as the greatest NFL duo.

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes to break another record?

While Travis Kelce has been at the Chiefs for more than a decade now, Patrick Mahomes joined him in 2017. 7 years later, they not only have won 2 Super Bowls but are well on course to achieve the status of greatest. In the 93 games played together, Kelce has scored 53 touchdowns with Mahomes to become the 3rd most successful tight end/quarterback combo in the NFL after Tom Brady-Rob Gronkowski (90) and Philip Rivers-Antonio Gates.

But if only playoffs are taken into consideration, Kelce and Mahomes surpassed the former New England Patriots duo last month against the Buffalo Bills. They now have 18 touchdowns together in playoffs, the most in NFL history. And as they lock horns with the 49ers today, the Chiefs’ big 2 will be itching to get a third Super Bowl Championship ring and for that, they will have to be at their best. Even if they are a little less, there’s a very high possibility that the two will score at least a couple of touchdowns. And if they do so, they will become the first NFL tight end/ quarterback combo to record 20 touchdowns in playoffs.

Can the 49ers keep Kelce-Mahomes at bay?

So while the records may not be broken, Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes will be a huge threat for the 49ers. The Chiefs’ tight end leads the charts with 562 receiving yards in the middle of the third during the regular season. In the postseason playoffs since 2016, Kelce has 833 receiving yards, the most by any. And as he is determined to add one more Super Bowl ring to his hand, he will give it all to knock down the 49ers.

Mahomes, on the other hand, is having a great season, averaging 3.4 air yards/completion while throwing with an average of 3.6 air yards short of the sticks. And if he combines well enough with Kelce, the 49ers will be out of contention early.
