Mike Vrabel’s always been a guy who stands tall, right? Well, here’s why. He’s got Terrell Williams in his corner. Williams joined Vrabel’s crew as defensive coordinator for the Patriots after spending six solid years with him in Tennessee. The guy’s a veteran—27 years of coaching under his belt. His NFL journey kicked off back in 2012 with the Raiders as their defensive line coach and later took him to the Dolphins from 2015 to 2017. By 2018, Vrabel had him locked in as his go-to D-line coach. But now? Things are looking a little shaky, with a health scare popping up at Patriots camp—and yeah, it’s hitting close to home for Williams.
The New England Patriots are cruising through rookie minicamp, but they’re missing one key piece—defensive coordinator Terrell Williams. Turns out, Williams is dealing with what he and head coach Mike Vrabel call a “health scare.” During a chat with reporters on Friday, Williams shared his side of the story via video call. “I came back home here to Detroit for spring break and had a little medical scare. I mean, it wasn’t a little medical scare; it was a medical scare,” Williams explained. Since that incident, his doctors have advised him to stay in Detroit while he focuses on his health. “…when there are things that you can prevent and you don’t prevent them, well, that’s just not being smart,” Williams admitted. It sounds like he’s taking this as a wake-up call.
Neither Williams nor Vrabel delved into the specifics of what exactly happened, but ESPN reported that Williams has been away from the team for about a month. Even though he’s not physically at the facility, he remains very much in the loop. He stays in constant contact with players and staff through Zoom, doing what he can to keep things moving. “I’ve been in constant communication with him daily,” Vrabel said. “Terrell is eager to get back, and we’re excited to have him back.”

This year is significant for both Williams and Vrabel—Williams begins his first season as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, and Vrabel starts his debut season running the team in New England. The two have a long history, spending six years together with the Tennessee Titans, where Williams served as assistant head coach and defensive line coach. Before that, Williams worked with the Dolphins, Raiders, and college programs such as Texas A&M and Purdue. His résumé is impressive.

Meanwhile, inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr has stepped up to take on some of Williams’ responsibilities. Kuhr isn’t new to Vrabel—he worked with him from 2020 to 2023 during their Titans days. Last year, Kuhr served as a defensive assistant for the New York Giants before joining the Patriots’ staff. He demonstrates versatility. Before his NFL career, Kuhr coached at college programs like Texas State and the University of Texas. Vrabel is clearly impressed with Kuhr’s handling of responsibilities so far. “Zak has great knowledge of our system, what we’ve done in the past, and with Terrell,” Vrabel said. Williams shares the same confidence, calling Kuhr a standout talent with what it takes to thrive in the league.
“Zak Kuhr has done an unbelievable job while I’ve been away. He’s an incredibly smart guy,” Williams said. “I think he’s going to be a superstar in this league. He’s smart, and more than anything, I believe he has the ability to connect with players. The defense is in good hands.”
Although everything appears solid for now, no clear timeline exists for Williams’ full return. Still, Williams reassures fans that he remains fully engaged even if he isn’t in the building. “I had a health scare, but I also want to make it clear that I’m away from the building, but I’m not away from the team,” he said. “I hope to get back soon and be in the building, around everyone.” For now, everyone supports Williams as he takes care of himself. With his remote involvement and Kuhr stepping up, the Patriots’ defense remains in good shape heading into the season.
