The New England Patriots are finally coming out of their shell. After years of keeping things private during the Bill Belichick era, the team is now ready to share more with fans. At the NFL’s annual meeting, it was revealed that the Patriots will be featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks in 2027. And insider Adam Schefter made it clear this was no random pick but a calculated move by the league. He explained how exactly things reached this point.

“Let me tell you why there was a double announcement, which we’ve never seen before,” Schefter laid out on his eponymous podcast. “Because the NFL has struggled in recent years to get teams to do Hard Knocks. And when the NFL has asked teams to do Hard Knocks during the summer, the answer that they’re commonly told is, ‘We’ll do it next year.’”
So, this will mark the first time the Pats have ever been part of Hard Knocks since the show began in 2001. Even after Tom Brady left Foxborough for Tampa and won a Super Bowl in 2020, the team still avoided the spotlight. That reluctance became part of their identity.

But things began to change after Brady left, which started the gradual decline of the dynasty. Bill Belichick, who made his name by keeping things under wraps, always avoided distractions. His approach led to a strict policy that prohibited cameras inside Gillette Stadium during his tenure in the City on a Hill. So, the league chose to change things up.
“So what the NFL did this year is when the New England Patriots said, ‘We’ll do it next year,’ they said, ‘You’re in!’ You’ve got 2027. Congratulations! Next year,’” ESPN’s lead NFL insider continued. “And so, they’ve taken two Super Bowl participants—the Seahawks this summer in ’26, the Patriots next summer in ’27—and they held their feet to the fire. And they said, ‘Next year? Next year it is.’ Next year, they will be on Hard Knocks.” That move left no room for delays.
In the past, the Patriots had a simple escape route. The playoff exemption rule let winning teams skip participation, and New England took advantage of it during their successful years. Even after the league closed that loophole and expanded eligibility, their answer remained the same: just delay it.
Now, that delay tactic is gone, as the NFL has put the Patriots in the spotlight for 2027. With Brady now working at FOX and Bill Belichick coaching in college, a new era is starting in Foxborough. Fans in the City on a Hill will finally get to see a team that’s ready to show itself, led by Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye.
Alongside Patriots, Seahawks will also feature in Hard Knocks
The NFL also announced the Seattle Seahawks will join Hard Knocks too. Both teams will participate in the HBO series, with the reigning champions from Seattle going first and the Patriots following a year later.
Interestingly, this is the first time the league has announced a Hard Knocks team this early. This summer, cameras will be inside the Seahawks’ training camp, allowing fans to see how their team gets ready after winning the championship.
As Seattle approaches 2026, they have a lot on their minds. The main concern is their running game after parting ways with Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III. Now, they’re looking at players like Emanuel Wilson, George Holani, and Kenny McIntosh to step up, while Zach Charbonnet is on the mend from an ACL injury, hoping to take back the top spot.
Naturally, Hard Knocks has earned its reputation through moments like these. Since it first aired in 2001 with the Ravens, the show has always given fans a peek behind the scenes, revealing the hard work, choices, and stress that shape an NFL season even before the first game kicks off.
After last year’s Buffalo Bills edition, the stage is now set for both the 12s and the City on a Hill to finally see their teams up close like never before.
